Position Title: Laboratory Operations Manager
Position Type: Part-time, 3month- Contract
Pay rate: $40-50/hour
Workplace: Onsite in Los Angeles, CA
A university-affiliated biotechnology incubator is seeking a hands-on, highly organized Part-Time Laboratory Manager to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of shared laboratory facilities.
This role is ideal for a laboratory operations professional who enjoys working in a collaborative, multi-tenant environment and can confidently coordinate safety, equipment, supplies, vendors, facilities, and day-to-day tenant needs.
The Laboratory Manager will work closely with the Incubator Director, internal stakeholders, tenant companies, university departments, and service providers to maintain a well-run, compliant, and welcoming environment for emerging life-science companies.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Safety and Compliance

• Maintain laboratory safety programs, SOPs, training records, and compliance documentation.
• Manage hazardous-material inventories and coordinate laboratory and hazardous-waste disposal.
• Help ensure laboratories, equipment, utilities, and safety systems remain safe, compliant, and operational.
• Maintain accurate records related to safety, training, equipment, inventories, and facility operations.

Laboratory and Facility Operations

• Oversee the day-to-day operation of shared laboratory spaces, equipment, utilities, and building systems.
• Coordinate equipment installation, preventive maintenance, repairs, service calls, and vendor relationships.
• Develop maintenance schedules that minimize operational disruptions and equipment downtime.
• Identify operational needs and support the development of new laboratory capabilities.

Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory

• Manage the acquisition, storage, distribution, and replenishment of laboratory supplies and consumables.
• Maintain accurate inventories of shared equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Prepare equipment and material specifications and assist with sourcing specialized items.
• Coordinate access, scheduling, and appropriate use of shared laboratory equipment.

Tenant Support and Onboarding

• Coordinate tenant orientations, onboarding, laboratory access, and facility access procedures.
• Provide guidance on laboratory procedures, equipment use, safety requirements, and facility operations.
• Serve as a responsive day-to-day resource for tenant companies and their laboratory needs.

University and Community Collaboration

• Build productive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, university departments, vendors, and incubator stakeholders.
• Support opportunities for collaboration between the incubator and the surrounding academic community.
• Coordinate university-related facility, laboratory, technology, and operational requests.

Technology, Records, and Reporting

• Coordinate service requests related to laboratory technology, telecommunications, audiovisual systems, and building support services.
• Maintain organized and current operational, safety, equipment, inventory, and training records.
• Prepare routine reports and documentation for the Incubator Director and relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, biotechnology, engineering, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
• Experience supporting laboratory operations in a research, biotechnology, life-science, academic, or incubator setting.
• Working knowledge of laboratory safety, hazardous-material handling, waste management, and SOPs.
• Experience coordinating equipment maintenance, repairs, vendors, or service contracts.
• Strong organizational, inventory-management, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize competing needs, and respond effectively to time-sensitive issues.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with researchers, entrepreneurs, faculty, staff, vendors, and university partners.
• Proficiency with standard office, scheduling, and record-keeping software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a biotechnology or life-science incubator.
• Familiarity with university laboratory operations or facilities management.
• Experience supporting shared equipment and multi-tenant laboratory environments.
• Knowledge of laboratory information-management or asset-management systems.
• Experience working with early-stage companies, researchers, or interdisciplinary teams.

Schedule and Engagement
This is a temporary, part-time assignment of approximately 15–20 hours per week for three months . The specific work schedule, including onsite days and daily hours, will be determined based on operational needs.
