Pay Range: C4-1, $23.73 - $35.31 per hour

Calendar: 181 Days, 7 Hours per day

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Executive Director of Integrated Services, Designee or School Director

Summary: Monitor, support, and assist students with a variety of disabilities by supporting appropriate vocational and community activities for students as developed by the IEP teams. Specific duties include modeling and supporting students on effective occupational, interpersonal, consumer, mobility, domestic and safety skills; implementing vocational placements: providing job coaching and transportation; collecting data; assisting students with alternative communication systems and/or adaptive equipment/technology; monitoring health and personal needs; performing clerical duties; and acting as a liaison between vocational placements and IEP teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate vocational tasks at job training sites.
  • Provide job coaching and follow-up support.
  • Assist employers with supporting student's rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Model and instruct effective vocational, interpersonal, consumer, mobility, domestic and safety skills.
  • Support students in demonstrating positive living skills by analyzing tasks, providing appropriate cues and opportunities for problem-solving, providing consistent behavior management intervention and planning for supervision of student activity.
  • Provide mobility training so that the student can access public facilities and public transportation.
  • Provide training and guidance within the guidelines established by each student's Individual Education and Transition plans.
  • Responsible for the safe and expedient transportation of students, including transporting to scheduled recreational, vocational, community settings. Monitoring student behavior, student safety, communicating vehicle concerns to school district transportation, aid in loading and unloading process of students including using proper procedures for loading, securing, and unloading wheelchairs.
  • Collect data and complete data collection forms and narrative reports on students' progress and needs.
  • Work with special education staff to create and/or enhance student learning opportunities and develop their Individual Education and Transition plans.
  • Assist with student health care, including one or more of the following: administering first aid to ill or injured children; caring for bathroom needs; dispensing medication; assisting with medical needs; executing health care directives related to tube feeding and other specific medical/health needs, monitoring diabetes, other health related situations; lifting and positioning students in wheelchairs, walkers, etc., escorting, feeding, maintaining health records, health care plans, logs, reports, required documentation; and ordering and stocking medical/health supplies.
  • Perform clerical duties, including, typing, data entry, filing and mailing.
  • Assist students with alternative communication systems and/or adaptive equipment and technology.
  • Provide training and education to community members, employers, and coworkers to support the use of the alternative communication systems and/or adaptive equipment.
  • May attend appropriate in-service trainings, transition program meetings or functions, community activities, assist in the office answering phones, filing documents, assisting parents and teachers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Note: Special Education staff are hired and assigned to schools and programs based on the level and type of student needs. Staff members may be reassigned or released in accordance with applicable law and policy, when any of the following occur: program modification, enrollment decline, or change in level and/or type of student needs.

Education and Training: AA Degree or pass District Assessment. May require training on specialized computer programs. Bilingual preferred.

Experience: 0-2 years' experience working with students in an educational setting. May require experience in health care; working with children with various learning and physical disabilities; or working on/with networks, network management, and/or integrated learning and application.

Skills, Knowledge, & Equipment: May require one or more of the following skills: basic English, grammar, spelling, writing, word processing, keyboarding, basic microcomputer skills, communication, and/or foreign language. May require operating knowledge of audiometer, vision screeners, charts, scales, blood pressure cuffs, and stethoscope, or word processing, database, and spreadsheet computer software, MS-DOS and Windows operating systems, and networks. Operating knowledge of general office equipment preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations: First Aid, CPR, and CPI certifications may be required. Valid Colorado driver's license. A copy of an individual Motor Vehicle Record must be submitted at time of application. Pass the school district Non-CDL Small Vehicle Route operator's licenses required within 30 days after entering position.

Training: Mandatory Title IX training is required by the Colorado Department of Education and for all public-school employees. Title IX training addresses harassment, discrimination, and bullying. Completing these mandatory Title IX training courses ensure we are meeting state requirements while continuing to foster a culture of safety and belonging across our schools. You will have two mandatory training courses that must be completed within 30 days of your date of hire and are required to be completed on your own time.

Supervisory/Technical Responsibility: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. May be required to act as a resource for supervising teacher, students, parents, administration, and/or staff.

Judgment and Decision Making: Work is assigned by supervising Teacher, Director, Assistant Director, Transition Coordinator, and/or Program Director. Requires independent judgment to manage students and assist in their education, make quick decisions, treat students equitably and fairly, evaluate students' abilities and progress, direct class/students in the absence of the teacher, provide a positive role model for the students, care for ill or injured students, and/or ensure computer equipment is functioning properly. Also requires ability to follow directions and follow school and District guidelines, policies, and procedures. Decision making is guided by District, school, and state policies, procedures, and behavioral standards; Infectious Disease Handbook; District Technology Plans; and/or Building Instructional Plans. Decision making is made in collaboration with the supervising Teacher, staff, Principal, Assistant Principal, parents, counselors, administrators, and/or supervisor. Errors in decision making could impact students' safety, health, education, and/or progress. Supervisor is always involved in decision making.
