Nursing Assistant / Health Unit Coordinator – Mother Baby Unit – Sherman Hospital Major Responsibilities Assists RN with daily care of patients including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders and ambulation, use of therapeutic assistive devices, proper positioning, range of motion, and special transferring as indicated. Measures and documents blood pressures, TPRs, intake and output, daily weights, and other patient data; documents accurately in EMR. Participates in admission, transfer and discharge process under RN supervision including room set up, orientation, linen removal, and management of patient belongings; ensures call light is always within reach and answers promptly. Performs purposeful rounding under RN direction, promptly communicating observations, concerns, and needs, and documents appropriately. Performs patient positioning and transportation duties requiring lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique and assistive devices. Handles nutritional tasks such as diet review, tray set up/removal, proper positioning, and diet selection; maintains skin integrity with proper repositioning and skin care; provides special supplies like TED hose and compression devices. Collects urine, stool, and sputum specimens and performs point‑of‑care testing; may remove IVs, provide post‑mortem care, and perform bladder scans per RN direction. Adheres to infection prevention policies and procedures, demonstrating hand hygiene, sterile and aseptic techniques, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and appropriate attire in isolation. Coordinates tests and treatments with various departments; maintains knowledge of diagnostic and treatment services and EHR/computer systems for ordering supplies and equipment; processes daily patient charges. Facilitates communications (telephone, paging, HIS), screens calls, monitors office equipment, and troubleshoots minor problems or arranges repair. Compiles chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations; obtains copies of records for transfers to nursing homes and other facilities; verifies completeness and accuracy. Establishes positive customer relations, acknowledges requests courteously, demonstrates phone etiquette, and fosters team communication. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patient age; understands growth and development principles and can assess patient data to identify age‑specific needs. Education / Experience Required High School Graduate, GED, or HSED. No experience required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Basic computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication. Excellent organizational skills and ability to set priorities. Excellent interpersonal skills; able to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities/workloads. High level of attention to detail. Will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g. DNV, CARF). Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required Nurse Aide in good standing with the State Registry. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) to be obtained within 45 days. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the shift. Must lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, 20 lbs. over the head, carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance; push/pull with 30 lbs. of force; perform sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present. Must use foot pedals on carts or machines. Must have functional vision and hearing. Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards and blood/body fluids; protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
