Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders. Dispensing and administering medications is also part of the role. The RN assists Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients. Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. All technical and clinical procedures performed fall within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills are utilized in the area and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. Preparation of a list of inmates/residents to be examined is required. The RN prepares the examining room and equipment. Medication distribution and documentation are performed according to policies and procedures. The RN calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders as needed. In case of emergencies, the RN notifies the appropriate providers. Examination and assessment of new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries are part of the responsibilities. Inmates/residents who become ill or injured may be referred to an emergency room or other healthcare facility. Emergency procedures are performed as needed, with treatment orders requested from the Licensed Independent Provider. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is essential. Monitoring inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate is required. The RN provides guidance, supervises, and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. A good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies must be maintained. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. Independent judgment is exercised in meeting responsibilities and performing duties. Regular evaluation of the provision of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all services provided are documented. Monitoring of potential catastrophic illnesses is essential. Pharmacy use is audited for adherence to formulary as directed or required. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those regarding controlled substances, is mandated. Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior are required. The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents. Supplies and equipment must be securely stored or safely disposed of. Health counseling and education on an individual or group basis are provided as required. The RN assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs. Proper grammar is used in all documentation, with timely processing of reports and documents required. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures along with legal documents are necessary skills. Response to lawsuits is a part of this role, including attendance at court hearings when necessary. Facilitation of accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and approved medical services is part of the responsibilities. Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures is necessary. Appropriate action must be taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
