Summary

American Progress is seeking a Budget Analyst who will play a pivotal role in its restricted-fund financial management infrastructure. This position is responsible for delivering accurate, timely, and audit-ready financial reporting for grant-funded activities and ensuring that expenditures align with funder intent, contractual terms, and internal financial policies. The Analyst partners cross functionally with Development, Finance, and program teams to translate financial activity into clear, funder-ready reporting and forward-looking projections that strengthen the organization's fiscal stewardship and compliance posture.

The role requires strong analytical capability, disciplined attention to detail, and an ability to manage multiple reporting cycles in a deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities:

Grant financial reporting (40 percent)

• Prepare proposal budgets, interim financial reports, and final grant reports for funders, in coordination with Development and Finance teams.
• Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, and aligned with approved grant budgets and executed agreements.
• Provide financial inputs and supporting data for proposals, renewals, extensions, and amendments.

Grant monitoring and forecasting (40 percent)

• Produce monthly temporary restricted net assets (TRNA) updates, including spend-to-date and forward-looking spend projections.
• Monitor actual expenses against budget, timelines, and grant conditions; identify variances and proactively flag emerging risks.
• Support ongoing projections to ensure timely and compliant spending of restricted funds.

Cross-functional coordination (20 percent)

• Partner with Development to confirm spending aligns with the funder's intent and allowable cost structures.
• Collaborate with Finance and program teams to validate allocations, resolve discrepancies, and maintain audit-ready documentation.
• Respond to internal inquiries on grant balances, timing, and allowable cost determinations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, public administration, or related field or equivalent experience.
• At least three years of experience in financial analysis, grant management, or nonprofit finance.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel; comfort working with financial reporting systems, datasets, and reconciliations.
• Strong analytical skills, organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, and follow-through.
• Familiarity with restricted funds, nonprofit cost principles, or grant compliance frameworks preferred.
• Ability to synthesize financial data, validate accuracy, produce funder-ready reporting packages, and identify variances, risks, and process gaps.
• Understanding of restricted funding, budget monitoring, allowable costs, and compliance considerations.
• High degree of organization, follow-through, and precision in managing reporting cycles, as well as clear written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
