Temporary Student Technician

Temporary student employees will be offered an opportunity to work for one of the teams in the Department of Pharmacy Services, depending on the need and availability of positions and work shifts.

Examples of areas/teams may include (but may not be limited to): B2/Central Pharmacy, Children's & Women's Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, Infusion Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care Pharmacy, OR Pharmacy, Specialty Pharmacy, Pharmacy Management.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities: Perform activities relating to or supporting the preparation, compounding, packaging, storing, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, licensed pharmacy technician, licensed pharmacy intern, and/or supervisor.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities - Essential Requirements include, but may not be limited to the following:

• Demonstrates proficiency and skill with pharmacy and health system information systems
• Accurately interpret prescriptions and information on medication labels and containers
• Participate in the documentation of patient care activities within the health record
• Accurately, prepare, compound, and label sterile and non-sterile medications for dispensing
• Stock and maintain pharmacy inventory
• Travel significant distances on a daily basis
• Maintains, dispenses, stores controlled substances and associated records as required
• Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
• Assist with use of automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis)
• Participate in audits and inspections which support regulatory and compliance standards
• Effectively communicate with other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, health-system employees, patients, families, and visitors
• Respond to internal and external customers demonstrating service excellence
• Transport medication safely and securely
• Resolve routine medication-related issues and ensure medication transactions are processed accurately and appropriately (insurance and cash-handling where applicable)
• Investigate and resolve routine medication history and reconciliation discrepancies
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor or pharmacist to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications and other patient care needs
• Ability to meet all of the above qualifications and requirements with or without reasonable accommodation
• The percentage mix of these duties will vary depending on the functional area where the employee is assigned

Training required ~ 6-weeks (full-time), or ~ 240 hours during the summer (usually in May-June, or as academic and personal commitments will allow). Successfully complete core pharmacy technician training and area-specific training (as required for specific job expectations).

Supervision Received Once a candidate accepts an offer for a position and then selects a team/work opportunity, an administrative supervisor will be assigned (the supervisor for that team/work area). Functional supervision is received from a Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Pharmacist Supervisor/Manager, and/or designee.

Eligible applicants include current UM College of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy Students, Doctor of Pharmacy Preferred Admission students, and students in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) program. The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all individuals involved in the practice of pharmacy to obtain and maintain a valid license. All successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a valid license to practice as a pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician per the Department of Pharmacy Services Licensing Policy. Current Doctor of Pharmacy students must have a valid pharmacy intern license. Doctor of Pharmacy Preferred Admission students and BSPS students will be required to obtain a valid pharmacy technician license. A temporary license is acceptable to begin employment, but this is only valid for 1 year and is non-renewable. Any employment beyond this duration will require that the individual obtain a full pharmacy technician license. Experience as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern, Basic algebra, Customer service experience.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Temporary student technicians are expected and required to follow all policies and procedures, the same as regular employees, including attendance, scheduling/call-ins, and all other policies and procedures; failure to adhere to these policies and procedures may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days. The review and selection process may begin as early as the eighth day after posting. This opening may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.
