Surgical Services Assistant II -Operating Room- Full Time - Days

Job Description This role provides fundamental care and services to the patient, family, and the unit environment, encompassing patient safety, customer service, and a clean environment for the surgical patient. Responsibilities Ensure the operating room (O.R.) remains clean, free of clutter, and that necessary supplies and equipment are available and acceptable. Properly clean, care for, and place essential equipment needed for scheduled cases (e.g., arthroscopy pump, fluoroscopy beds, video equipment, overhead tables). Maintain orderliness and efficiency by cleaning utility areas, hallways, restrooms, equipment, shelves, cart racks, and scrub sinks. Stock and check equipment and supplies, ensuring they are not outdated; replenish work areas and O.R. rooms with gloves, needle boxes, etc. Check and record temperature of refrigerators, make adjustments, and report to Maintenance as needed. Run errands (e.g., Blood Bank, Central Service, Pathology, X-Ray department) while remaining available in the designated area. Transport specimens as directed by RN and assist with patient positioning and moving from bed to stretcher per RN instructions. Transport floor patients to O.R.; demonstrate sound judgment, understand the hospital code system, and know when RN assistance is required. Remove unneeded equipment and return it to proper storage areas. Perform surgical shave preparations as needed per O.R. prep guidelines and/or surgeon preference. Assist circulating nurse with tying sterile gowns and hold extremities as directed. Obtain case carts from Central and deliver to the proper O.R. room prior to the scheduled start time. Communication Share pertinent patient information and maintain open communication regarding patient care needs among team members and ancillary departments. Report observations/data to appropriate team members (RN, AAC, surgeon) and communicate isolation precautions and special patient needs such as oxygen, EKG monitoring, and patient limitations. Leadership Demonstrate leadership skills including motivation, education, and mentoring peers; act rapidly and calmly during emergencies and provide necessary items called for by the O.R. team. Cooperate with other duties within scope, attend unit meetings, required in‑services, and education programs. Adhere to established standards in personal appearance and conduct (dress code, core values, attendance). Productivity Maintain orderliness and efficiency according to AORN Standards to minimize turnaround time between cases; display flexibility by accepting assignment changes and understand fiscal responsibility by utilizing time, equipment, and supplies appropriately. Safety Call maintenance for necessary repairs, stock supplies per standards, and ensure beds/stretchers/carts are correctly positioned for patient safety. Execute infection control practices such as hand washing, aseptic technique, universal precautions, isolation procedures, proper waste disposal, and handling of hazardous spills. Handle oxygen tanks safely, ensure patient consent is signed and SDS records are signed, and understand sterile technique. Qualifications Education: High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
