Department: Surgery Center | Reports To: RN Manager-Surgery Center The mission of Faith Health is to serve Christ by providing all people with exemplary medical services in an environment of love and care. Summary: The registered nurse (RN) is a professional nurse under the supervision and direction of the department manager/director. The RN works within the state defined scope of practice and adheres to department and hospital policies/procedures and regulatory requirements. The Operating Room RN utilizes nursing process for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients. The care delivered is individualized and goal directed. The RN is responsible for the supervision of delegated tasks. The RN works cohesively and collaboratively with providers and other interdisciplinary health care team members to provide high quality and safe care. - Incorporates cultural considerations in the provisions of care.
- Knowledge of growth and developmental stages.

- Provides necessary safety measures.
- Provides information and involves family/caregiver in decision making.
- Conducts individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient's immediate condition or needs within the timeframe specified by policy.
- Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by patient condition and policy and reprioritizes care accordingly.
- Develops and updates the plan of care throughout the patient stay ensuring that is individualized and reflects collaboration with other health care team members.
- Identifies patient/family discharge planning needs upon admission.
- Performs appropriate treatments including medication administration per physician order and per policy in an accurate and timely manner.
- Reports patient concerns and condition changes to the provider in a timely manner.
- Performs therapeutic nursing interventions in line with the plan of care.
- Provides individualized patient/family education customized to patient and family needs.
- Documents all nursing cares and education accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
- Documents response to nursing cares and education accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
- Delegates and supervises appropriate patient care.
- Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient and family diversity, preserving autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Actively participates and involves the patient and family in handoffs and bedside shift report and relates pertinent patient information.
- Responds appropriately, professionally, with composure and confidence during emergencies and stressful situations.
- Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process
- Organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management and turnover
- Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating or endoscopy/procedure room.
- Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and in an effective turnover time
- Assists with supply, drug, and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability
- Addresses patient needs during admission to the operating or endoscopy/procedure room, with attention to requirements specific to the outpatient setting
- Transports patients to the operating or endoscopy/procedure room observing policies/procedures, safety requirements, and patient needs
- Explains intraoperative phase of routine procedures and care to the patient
- Performs the circulating nurse's role and functions following approved operating and endoscopy room procedures to meet the requirements of scheduled procedures
- Prepares the operating or endoscopy/procedure room according to requirements of patient/procedure to be performed
- Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before start of procedure and positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure
- Anticipates needs of surgical team and assists anesthesia personnel by supporting patient during administration of anesthesia
- Assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient and prepares the operative site as directed by established procedures
- Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards
- Assists with identification and confirmation of operative site
- Provides for comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters
- Provides continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel and documenting records accordingly
- Performs sterile processing duties as backup when needed or assigned. Duties are expected as defined below:
- Maintains a clean and orderly central processing work area (i.e. shelves, counters, equipment)
- Adheres to the sterilization and reprocessing process policies and procedures
- Cleans each item according to manufacturer's instruction
- Inspects instruments for damage and defects; lubricates items as required
- Determines each time is in good working condition
- Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure
- Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date
- Correctly operates sterilizers and other equipment for processing items
- Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed
- Checks indicators for proper functioning
- Performs required biological/chemical monitoring tests on all sterilizers and maintains logs according to established policies and procedures
- Maintains availability of supplies for continuity of recording throughout sterilization process
- Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures
- Performs cleaning of all scopes per policy
- Changes solutions and filters according to policy and manufacturers recommendations
- Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces as necessary
- Accurately documents count of instruments, scopes, and equipment loaned/returned to outside sources
- Maintains confidentiality per policy.
- Maintains current competency by attending unit and hospital based educational offerings either in person or online.
- Actively engages in unit activities and team meetings and attends required meetings.
- Demonstrates active engagement in department activities and evidence-based initiatives.
- Demonstrates dependability/flexibility in meeting scheduling needs of the department and hospital.
- Demonstrates willingness to float to other units as needed.
- Accepts assignment of preceptor for new staff.
- Accepts responsibility for mentoring healthcare students.
- Ensures the quality and safety of the patients and staff if serving in a relief charge nurse role.
