City Prosecutor
The City of Flagstaff is seeking an experienced and collaborative City Prosecutor to lead the Prosecution Section of the City Attorney's Office. This high-impact leadership role oversees the fair, effective, and efficient prosecution of misdemeanor offenses within the City while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
The City Prosecutor serves as the public-facing leader of the Prosecution Section, supervising a team of attorneys and support staff and providing legal guidance on the interpretation and enforcement of laws, regulations, and City policies. Success in this role requires sound legal judgment, strong leadership, clear communication, and the ability to build respectful, effective relationships with law enforcement, the Municipal Court, defense attorneys, other City divisions, and regional and state criminal justice partners.

Examples of the Work Performed
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers
- Create, establish, and supervise all processes and procedures for the day-to-day operations of the Prosecution section
- Responds to questions from other city divisions regarding what action they should take under a given set of circumstances
- Responds to members of the public and victims that have a unique criminal justice system issue that cannot be handled as a routine matter
- Drafts victim letters, victim forms for restitution, victim questionnaires utilizing processes and procedures that ensures our section meets our legal obligation to provide victim's rights services as mandated by Arizona State Statutes
- Drafts motions, court pleadings, and criminal complaints
- Reviews criminal cases; drafts plea offers; meets with defendants, police officers, witnesses, and victims; communicates and corresponds with defense counsel; drafts motions and responds to motions; prepares and presents witness arguments to the court for evidentiary hearings and oral arguments; tries cases before the Flagstaff Municipal Court; makes sentencing recommendations; prepares and presents cases for restitution; handles appeals to the Coconino County Superior Court
- Creates plea offer guidelines and revises as necessary to reflect changes in the law or changes to program objectives
- Coordinates program activities with the Flagstaff Police Department and Flagstaff Municipal Court
- Serves as a member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) for Northern Arizona
- Serves as a member of the Behavioral Health Subcommittee of the CJCC
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association with a Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree
- Member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona
- Seven (7) or more years of experience in prosecution
- Two (2) or more years of senior-level supervisory experience
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
