Lead Line Cook

Poppy's is seeking a Lead Line Cook for our high-volume cafe and market located in Brooklyn Heights. Our cafe is supported by a lovely local community and we serve primarily repeat customers. Our compact kitchen is somewhat open and visible to customers, which requires candidates to be comfortable in a customer-facing role. This is a fast-paced, collaborative and ego-free environment.

REQUIREMENTS

• Positive + patient demeanor
• Excellent verbal + written communicator
• Extremely organized
• Passionate about seasonality + working with our farm partners
• Possesses a NYC food handler’s permit or willing to obtain one in a timely manner
• At least 2 years of cooking experience required
• Pastry experience a plus
• FOH experience a plus
• Familiarity with Google Workspace a plus
• Must be available on weekends

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead by example on the line, preparing breakfast/lunch sandwiches, salads, and food items according to Poppy's recipes, yields, and portioning standards.

• Train, coach, and support kitchen team members on prep methods, food safety, and cleanliness, providing respectful feedback in real time.

• Organize daily production using checklists, communicate shift priorities, and maintain pace to keep the kitchen ahead of peak service.

• Ensure all food production, storage, labeling, cooling, and handling meet or exceed NYC Department of Health (DOH) requirements.

• Store deliveries properly, monitor inventory levels to minimize waste, and ensure opening, shift-change, and closing checklists are fully completed to set up the next shift for success.

While performing the duties of the job, a Lead Line Cook is regularly required to stand and walk; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. They must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
