Facilities Technician/Building Engineer

The Building Engineer provides routine and specialized repair and maintenance support for a commercial property, using a computerized maintenance management system to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all building systems. This role focuses on diagnosing and resolving issues across mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and control systems, while offering technical guidance to facility staff on equipment operation and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized maintenance and repair on building systems using a computerized maintenance management system.
• Diagnose and correct problems with mechanical systems, including pumps, belt drives, gear reduction drives, piping, and valves.
• Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, and other components used for water distribution and wastewater disposal.
• Install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems, including wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures, and components.
• Maintain and repair control systems such as sensors, limit switches, solenoids, and motors to ensure proper building operation.
• Support HVAC operations and repairs, including work on boilers, chillers, rooftop units, and related mechanical and pneumatic components.
• Perform general facilities maintenance tasks such as ceiling tile replacement, lighting and ballast repair, painting, replacing door knobs, and hanging whiteboards.
• Repair and maintain kitchen appliances and coordinate with vendors as needed for specialized repairs or services.
• Use power tools and construction-related skills to complete maintenance and minor building repair projects safely and efficiently.
• Provide technical support and general guidance to facility staff on the operation and repair of equipment, utilities, and building components.
• Troubleshoot complex facilities issues, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.
• Document work activities accurately in computerized systems, including maintenance requests, work orders, and repair histories.
• Work both independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks within established timelines.
• Be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to support building operations and respond to urgent maintenance issues.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in using computerized systems for all aspects of job performance, including maintenance management and documentation.
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and repair skills for mechanical, electrical, and utility systems.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and effective problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
• Experience with electrical work, including installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of wiring, fixtures, and equipment.
• Experience with plumbing work, including installation, repair, and maintenance of pipes, fixtures, and wastewater systems.
• Hands-on experience with HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, rooftop units, and related components.
• General facilities maintenance experience covering minor plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building repairs.
• Ability to work effectively both unsupervised and as part of a team.
• Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
• Ability and willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with pneumatics and mechanical systems in a facilities environment.
• Background in construction or building trades and safe use of power tools.
• Knowledge of lighting systems, including ballast replacement and ceiling tile work.
• Familiarity with boiler and chiller operations and routine maintenance practices.
• Experience repairing kitchen appliances in a commercial or institutional setting.
• Vendor management skills, including coordinating and overseeing external service providers.
• General painting, carpentry, and hardware replacement skills, such as door knobs and wall-mounted fixtures.
• Understanding of EPA-related considerations in facilities maintenance (e.g., environmental and safety awareness).

Work Environment

The role is based in a commercial facility and involves working on-site as part of a team of approximately 11 building engineering and facilities professionals, including a chief building engineer. Work is hands-on and involves regular use of tools and equipment related to electrical, plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, construction, and general maintenance tasks. The schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays to support continuous building operations. The environment emphasizes teamwork, safety, and effective communication while maintaining the property’s systems and appearance.

Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plano, TX.

Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
