Client-Facing Bookkeeper Manager

About the Role We are looking for a Client‑Facing Bookkeeper Manager who can manage bookkeeping work, communicate directly with clients, lead internal follow‑up, and help clients feel cared for and confident in their financial information. This is not a back‑office‑only bookkeeping role. This person will be expected to interact with clients, ask good questions, identify issues, manage deadlines, help keep work moving, and provide thoughtful support to both clients and the internal team. The right person is detail‑oriented, warm, organized, tech‑comfortable, and confident enough to own their work. They do not wait to be told every next step. They can look at a client’s books, notice what is missing or unusual, and help move the situation forward. What Makes This Role Different At many firms, bookkeeping is treated like data entry. At Lloyd & Hodge, bookkeeping is part of the client relationship. Our bookkeeping work supports tax planning, business decision‑making, clean reporting, payroll, and long‑term client success. We want our clients to feel like they have a knowledgeable team watching out for them, not just someone reconciling accounts in the background. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both the technical side of bookkeeping and the people side of client service. You will be helping business owners feel more organized, more informed, and more supported. What You’ll Be Doing Client Service & Communication You will serve as a key point of contact for bookkeeping clients. This includes answering questions, requesting missing information, explaining bookkeeping items in plain English, and helping clients understand what we need from them. You will be expected to communicate clearly, kindly, and professionally. Our clients should feel supported, not scolded. We are looking for someone who can follow up firmly when needed while still maintaining warmth and trust. You will manage and review bookkeeping work for accuracy, completeness, and consistency. This may include bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, transaction coding, financial statement review, cleanup items, and monthly close processes. You should be comfortable identifying unusual transactions, missing information, uncategorized items, balance sheet issues, payroll posting concerns, and anything that may affect tax preparation or client reporting. Monthly Financial Review You will help ensure monthly books are reviewed thoughtfully, not just completed. This means looking at the financials with curiosity and common sense. You should be able to ask questions like: “Does this income look reasonable?” “Why is this expense unusually high?” “Are loan payments being split correctly?” “Does the balance sheet make sense?” “Is this something the tax team needs to know about?” Team Coordination You will help keep bookkeeping work moving across the team. This may include assigning tasks, reviewing work, following up on open items, helping team members problem‑solve, and making sure deadlines do not fall through the cracks. We are looking for someone who can help create calm, structure, and accountability. Process Improvement Because we are a growing, modern firm, we are always improving how we do things. You may help refine workflows, improve client communication templates, document processes, organize recurring tasks, and make our bookkeeping service more consistent and scalable. We value people who notice friction and say, “I think we can make this better.” What We’re Looking For Has strong bookkeeping experience and understands how clean books support tax preparation and business decisions. Is comfortable working directly with clients and does not hide behind email or tasks. Can communicate clearly and professionally, even when a client is confused, behind, or frustrated. Understands QuickBooks Online and is comfortable using cloud‑based tools. Has strong follow‑through and does not need constant reminders. Can manage multiple clients, deadlines, and moving pieces without becoming scattered. Is willing to learn our systems and help improve them. Cares about accuracy, but also understands that client service matters just as much. Can lead with both confidence and kindness. Thinks proactively instead of only reacting to what is directly assigned. Required Experience Strong bookkeeping experience, preferably with multiple business clients. Experience with QuickBooks Online. Experience reviewing reconciliations and financial statements. Comfort communicating with clients by email, phone, video, or portal message. Strong organizational skills. Ability to manage deadlines and recurring monthly work. Good judgment around when to solve something independently and when to elevate it. CPA firm experience is helpful, but it is not required if you have strong bookkeeping, client service, and leadership skills. Bonus Points Experience with TaxDome or other client portal systems. Payroll coordination or payroll journal entries. Client cleanup projects. Month‑end close workflows. Managing or reviewing another bookkeeper’s work. Creating SOPs or improving internal processes. Working with business owners who need help understanding their numbers. Who Will Thrive Here You will probably love this role if you like structure, but you also like improving things. You want your work to matter beyond checking transactions off a list. Who This Role Is Not For This role is probably not a fit if you only want to do behind‑the‑scenes data entry. It is not a fit if client communication drains you or if you prefer to avoid follow‑up. It is not a fit if you need every task spelled out before taking action. It is not a fit if you are uncomfortable with technology, change, or improving processes. It is not a fit if you believe bookkeeping is only about categorizing transactions and reconciling bank accounts. We are looking for someone who wants ownership, not just assignments.
