Chief Forensic Pathologist

About The Position The Riverside County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for the Chief Forensic Pathologist in Perris. This position directs and coordinates all forensic pathology activities of the Sheriff/Coroner/Public Administrator's Office. Responsibilities include determining the cause and manner of death for deceased in custody, testifying as an expert witness at inquests, coroner reviews, and court trials, and performing additional related duties as required. Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ experience as a forensic pathologist. The class reports to a Sheriff’s Captain and has primary responsibility for establishing policies, procedures, standards, and controls to ensure accurate autopsies, toxicological, and clinical laboratory examinations. The incumbent also directs contract pathologists, oversees departmental staff in post‑mortem examinations, and provides expert testimony in court concerning findings. Refer to the policy for details. Examples Of Essential Duties Establish policies, procedures, standards, and controls for autopsies and toxicology examinations. Perform autopsies and evaluate investigative information to determine cause, manner, and time of death. Collect and analyze medical evidence, including trace evidence and secretions, and submit samples for laboratory testing when required. Prepare detailed reports and consult with judicial and law‑enforcement personnel to interpret autopsy findings. Testify at inquests, coroner review processes, and court trials. Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate ancillary staff performing post‑mortem examinations. Provide formal training and guidance to staff on forensic pathology, court testimony, and report writing. Stay informed of current techniques and equipment and initiate special research projects as needed. Maintain records related to work activities and assist in budget preparation. Minimum Qualifications Valid Physician’s and Surgeon’s Certificate issued by the State of California. Forensic Pathologist Board Certification. Valid driver’s license. Comprehensive knowledge of modern medicine, autopsy techniques, forensic pathology equipment, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Ability to perform highly skilled post‑mortem examinations, review complex investigations, manage staff, communicate effectively, and serve as a competent expert witness. Working Conditions Regular attendance at evening meetings, press conferences, and death scenes may be required. Must maintain integrity and professional standards at all times. Provide leadership in highly stressful or crisis situations. Ensure compliance with regulations and policies related to medical examinations. Respond to technical questions for diverse audiences, including juries and other experts. Establish internal controls and coordinate work activities efficiently.
