Non Instructional/Operations - HVAC Specialist General Definition of Work The HVAC control specialist, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion related to the repair, evaluation, and operation of all HVAC equipment and systems in an assigned region of up to 15 schools. The HVAC control specialist is in contact with outside mechanical contractors, internal engineering staff, school administrators, and other CMS staff on a regular basis. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the HVAC Assistant Supervisor. Reports To HVAC Assistant Supervisor Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time. Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures Respond to operational emergencies related to HVAC systems; troubleshoot issues to determine causes and implement solutions Calibrate, repair, or replace HVAC controls including electronic, pneumatic, or electric Assist in solving difficult and specialized technical HVAC system problems Operate the school system energy management equipment and repair as needed Assist state and local fire, safety, and insurance officials in conducting school system inspections, coordinate outside contractors for a variety of jobs Estimate materials and labor costs needed for special projects or new construction, write specifications, and order supplies Operate and maintain a variety of power equipment and hand tools used in the performance of HVAC repair and maintenance tasks Assist in the selection of renovation sites or equipment replacement; maintain records on service equipment Ensure HVAC compliance with health and safety standards Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of North Carolina State Code Knowledge of approved electrical methods, practices, code requirements, and safety standards Knowledge of pertinent building and construction codes and regulations Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including safe practices and procedures of the trade Knowledge of procedures and proper use of tools and equipment used in refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment maintenance and repair Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping Ability to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment including control systems (DDC / pneumatic) and cutting-edge and outdated technology and equipment Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, plans, and specifications. Ability to estimate labor and materials costs Ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor Ability to work effectively under emergency and hazardous situations Ability to maintain a variety of records relative to HVAC repair and maintenance Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent with extensive technical training in commercial HVAC systems including controls with seven (7) years of experience Diploma or associate's degree in HVAC technology / DDC control systems with three (3) years of highly technical experience in commercial HVAC systems and/or control systems (DDC/pneumatic) Programmable Logic Control (PLC) training preferred Equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements One or more of relevant specialty areas professional-level NATE certifications or the ability to obtain within 6 months of starting the position Universal CFC certification Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to/from work Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Work regularly requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials between 50 - 90 lbs.
