Department of Transportation Enforcement & Compliance Full Authority Lateral Officer $4,000 Hiring Incentive Location: Port of Entry, HWY 89A Milepost 699.0, Fredonia, AZ 86022 Salary: $57,301.32 – $69,807.26 Grade: 20 Closing Date: 06/30/2026 Job Summary Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, an Officer focuses on public safety by protecting life, property and the state transportation infrastructure, by providing safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona; enforces all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance; completes all work assignments and training in a timely manner, good decision making, makes arrests when necessary, professionalism, testifies in court when required, prepares clear and concise written reports, exercises judgment in determining use of force, and promotes compliance of all state and federal laws, rules and regulations directly related to the duties of the position. Background check and in- and out-of-state travel is required. Job Duties Screen commercial driver and vehicle credentials Weigh commercial vehicles and perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections Perform registration compliance, commercial vehicle safety inspections, and traffic stops on commercial vehicles Enforce all pertinent laws, rules and regulations and carry out all other duties performed by Officers Issue applicable permits, route over‑dimensional loads, and collect appropriate fees and taxes Take appropriate enforcement action as authorized by state and federal motor vehicle and operator laws, rules and regulations Inspect vehicles, dealer and salvage yard operations for compliance with state title and registration requirements Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of: Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners Defensive tactics First Aid, CPR Court systems, procedures and protocols Activity reporting and accounting procedures Principles of report writing Minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer Skilled in: Interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusionsEstablishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the general publicUse and care of firearmsOperate police equipment in emergency situationsExercise discretion in use of forceVerbal and written communication, writing clear and concise reportsProblem solving and using good judgementCompleted basic and advanced training comparable to the Arizona basic courseGoogle Workspace proficiency Ability to: Prepare clear and concise reports Communicate effectively with staff members and the general public Maintain moral standards and integrity Work as a team and collaborate Obtain and maintain a CVSA certification Make effective and reasonable decisions under pressure Operate law enforcement computers, software and database programs Maintain required firearms certification Understand and interpret laws and regulations Obtain an appointment from an Arizona Law Enforcement Agency Selective Preference(s) Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws and regulations, computer skills, report writing and basic money handling experience 1 year of law enforcement experience Pre-Employment Requirements Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certifications Weapons certified in accordance with AZPOST standards Obtain the CVSA certification within 6 months of hire Valid Driver’s License If certification has lapsed, eligibility to obtain AZPOST certification through Waiver Testing; Physical Ability Test required for all waiver testing Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class‑appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. Maintain acceptable driving records and complete all required driver training. A personally owned vehicle used on state business must maintain the statutory liability insurance. All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
