As Payroll Manager Key responsibilities will include: Lead, manage, and develop the payroll team, ensuring high levels of performance, accuracy, and operational efficiency. Oversee the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring all employees are paid accurately and on time in accordance with payroll schedules. Manage pension submissions and ensure full compliance with workplace pension and auto-enrolment requirements. Ensure compliance with all relevant UK payroll legislation, including HMRC regulations, tax laws, pension legislation, and employment law. Investigate and resolve complex payroll queries and issues, providing expert support to employees and internal stakeholders. Develop, implement, and maintain payroll best practices to improve accuracy, efficiency, and service delivery. Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal departments Manage the relationship with the payroll software provider, ensuring the system remains up to date with legislative changes, software enhancements, and new releases. Monitor changes in payroll legislation and industry best practice, implementing necessary updates to ensure ongoing compliance and operational excellence. Conduct regular payroll audits and process reviews, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and strengthening internal controls. Coach, mentor, and support the payroll team through training and development initiatives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high performance. What are we looking for? To be successful as Payroll Manager, you will have the following skills and experience: Minimum of 3 years’ proven experience managing a payroll team, ideally within an organisation employing 1,000+ employees across multiple entities. Demonstrable experience managing payrolls involving hourly-paid employees, with a strong understanding of time and attendance systems. Professional payroll qualification (e.g. CIPP certification) is desirable. Proven track record of identifying, implementing, and driving continuous payroll process improvements. Collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively across departments to resolve payroll queries and improve processes. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
