ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The company is an established structural steel fabricator and erector headquartered in central Indiana, serving commercial, industrial, and institutional construction markets across the Midwest and Southeast.

The company is expanding its presence in the Carolinas and is hiring regional Project Managers in two markets to manage projects from contract award through closeout. This role is the primary owner of the customer relationship and the project P&L.

THE ROLE

This is a hands-on regional Project Manager role. The right candidate manages 10 to 20 active projects at any given time, ranging from miscellaneous metals packages to full structural steel scopes on commercial and industrial buildings. Project values typically range from $250K to $5M and may include fabrication-only scopes, fabrication and erection scopes, or erection-only scopes.

The PM owns contract execution end-to-end: scope confirmation, submittal management, schedule coordination across the shop and the field, change orders, billings, and closeout. Most days involve a mix of customer calls, internal coordination with detailing, fabrication, and erection crews, site visits, and time in the general contractor's office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Execution

• Own project execution from contract award through final closeout for assigned projects in the Charlotte territory.

• Review contract documents, drawings, and specifications. Identify scope ambiguities, contract risks, and clarification opportunities before submittals start.

• Manage submittals, RFIs, and shop drawing approvals in coordination with the detailing team and the general contractor.

• Develop and maintain project schedules that align fabrication releases, ship dates, and erection sequences with the GC's construction schedule.

• Coordinate material procurement, mill orders, and outside processing through the operations team.

• Manage change orders, including pricing, documentation, and customer approval. Protect project margin through disciplined change-order capture.

Fabrication and Erection Coordination

• Coordinate with the shop on fabrication sequencing, ship dates, and release packages.

• Coordinate with the erection superintendent and field crews on mobilization, crew sizing, crane and equipment logistics, and field schedule.

• Walk projects in the field during critical sequences. Spend time on site to verify progress, resolve field issues, and reinforce safety expectations.

• Coordinate with safety leadership on site-specific safety plans, JHAs, and any incidents or near-misses.

• Track field productivity against the budget and forecast erection cost-to-complete monthly.

Customer and GC Relationships

• Serve as the primary point of contact for the GC, owner, and design team on assigned projects.

• Attend regular owner-architect-contractor meetings in person where possible.

• Build and maintain GC relationships in the Charlotte market. Identify add-on opportunities and bring qualified leads to the estimating team.

Financial Accountability

• Own the project budget across both fabrication and erection scopes. Track cost-to-complete on a monthly cadence and flag variances early.

• Coordinate with the accounting team on monthly billings, percent-complete revenue recognition, and AR follow-up.

• Lead monthly project reviews with the operations and finance teams.

• Manage retention release and final closeout, including punch list and as-builts.

Pre-Construction and Estimating Support

• Support the estimating team on pre-construction scope reviews and budget pricing for opportunities in the regional market.

• Provide cost feedback to estimating based on actual project results, including realized erection productivity.

• Identify scope or contract terms that should be flagged in future bids.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Required Experience

• 5+ years of project management experience in structural steel fabrication, structural steel erection, miscellaneous metals, or related trade contracting.

• Working knowledge of structural steel detailing, fabrication, and erection sequences. Experience managing both shop and field workstreams strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated track record of managing multiple concurrent projects in the $250K to $5M range.

• Strong contract document review skills. Comfortable identifying scope risks and writing clear change orders.

• Direct customer-facing experience with general contractors, project managers, and project owners.

• Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally.

Strongly Preferred

• Prior experience in the Carolinas commercial construction market and an established GC network.

• Familiarity with Tekla Structures, PowerFab, Procore, or ProjectSight.

• AISC certifications or AWS welding inspector credentials.

• Background in trade contracting on commercial, industrial, or institutional construction.

• Experience working with WIP accounting and percent-of-completion billings.

• OSHA 30 or comparable safety credential.

• Direct and unflappable. Comfortable holding GCs accountable while maintaining the relationship.

• Owner mindset. Treats the project budget like it is their own money.

• Organized. Manages 6 or more active projects without dropping balls on submittals, billings, or field coordination.

• Comfortable in the field, in the office, and on the phone. Spends real time at job sites and GC offices, not just at a desk.

• Self-directed. The role is regional and largely remote from the central Indiana headquarters.

• Base salary: $90,000 to $110,000, calibrated to experience.
