OD/ID Grinding Machine Operator

This role involves setting up and operating older-style manual grinding machines to perform high-precision ID/OD and surface grinding on metal components, with a strong focus on tight tolerances and quality inspection using precision measurement tools.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual grinding machines, including ID/OD and surface grinders, with a focus on older equipment.
• Perform precision grinding on various metal components to meet tight tolerance requirements, including work for aerospace applications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, and related technical documentation to determine grinding requirements.
• Set and adjust machine offsets, tooling, and fixtures to achieve optimal performance and dimensional accuracy.
• Monitor grinding operations and make necessary adjustments to maintain consistent quality and productivity.
• Inspect in-process and finished parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other precision inspection tools.
• Verify that all parts meet specified tolerances and quality standards before release.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow standard operating procedures for safe machine operation.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve production issues and improve processes.
• Participate in mandatory initial training to learn shop-specific procedures, standards, and safety practices.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 years of experience with ID/OD grinding on manual machines.
• Hands-on experience setting up and operating manual grinders, including centerless and other precision grinding equipment.
• Strong understanding of precision machining principles and tight tolerance requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work instructions accurately.
• Ability to perform basic math calculations related to machining and dimensional inspection.
• Proficiency using inspection tools such as micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Experience working in environments requiring tight tolerances, such as aerospace or similar high-precision industries.
• Capability to set machine offsets, adjust tooling, and dial in setups for optimal performance on manual grinding equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating older manual grinding equipment and comfort working with legacy machines.
• Experience in precision machining environments with a focus on grind operations.
• Familiarity with centerless grinding processes.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained.
• Willingness to work different shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends, as required.
• Flexibility to support overtime needs during the week when available.
• Prior experience as a traveler or contractor in manufacturing or machining environments is beneficial.

The role offers multiple shift options, including weekend shifts, to support work-life flexibility. Travelers receive a daily per diem and the potential for extensions beyond the initial assignment. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Machesney Park, IL.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
