Job Description

This role supports a large-scale plastics manufacturing facility that produces high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for major infrastructure and industrial projects. As a Maintenance Technician, you perform preventive and corrective maintenance on production equipment, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, and help ensure continuous, safe, and efficient operation of extrusion and plastics manufacturing lines.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on production equipment and machinery to ensure reliable operation.

• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems to identify root causes of equipment issues.

• Diagnose equipment problems and complete timely repairs to minimize unplanned downtime.

• Support extrusion and plastics manufacturing equipment, including heaters, motors, drives, pumps, conveyors, valves, and gearboxes.

• Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical manuals to guide maintenance and repair activities.

• Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, and continuous improvement projects to enhance reliability and performance.

• Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and documentation for all service and repair activities.

• Follow and enforce safety standards, including lockout/tagout and proper use of personal protective equipment, in line with company policies.

• Participate in preventive and predictive maintenance programs through routine inspections and condition monitoring.

• Collaborate with production and maintenance team members to prioritize work, support production goals, and reduce downtime.

• Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively while working on continuous production equipment.

• Support a fast-paced, production-driven environment by responding to equipment issues during rotating shifts and on-call assignments.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 2+ years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.

• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills, including pumps, motors, conveyors, valves, and gearboxes in a manufacturing setting.

• Experience with preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including routine inspections and downtime reduction.

• Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and their components.

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and equipment manuals.

• Basic electrical troubleshooting skills for motors, drives, and sensors, with exposure to PLCs considered a plus.

• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical troubleshooting, and PLC basics (preferred).

• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment while following strict safety standards such as lockout/tagout and PPE requirements.

• Ability to use diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve equipment issues.

• Comfort working in a fast-paced, production-driven environment with continuous operations.

• High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Technical certification in industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical, or a related field (preferred).

• Experience supporting extrusion and plastics manufacturing equipment or similar continuous production processes.

• Exposure to PLC systems and industrial controls, even if not responsible for heavy programming.

• Bckground in industrial equipment repair involving hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical systems.

• Willingness to participate in rotating shifts and on-call rotations to support production needs.

• Strong attention to detail, documentation, and adherence to maintenance procedures.

• Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with production and maintenance personnel.

Work Environment

This role is based in an industrial plastics manufacturing facility focused on large-scale pipe extrusion located on a waterfront site. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with participation in an on-call rotation, including a minimum of four hours paid for each on-call response and overtime paid at 1.5x for hours over 40. The production floor can be hot and noisy at times, and personal protective equipment such as steel-toe footwear, safety glasses, and hearing protection is required. Work is hands-on, involving troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems on continuous production equipment. The environment is production-driven and team-oriented, with a strong focus on minimizing downtime and maintaining a high standard of safety. Flexibility to work rotating shifts and respond to on-call needs is essential.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charleston, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
