Job Overview We are seeking a Part‑Time Psychiatric Nurse to join the Psychiatry Float Pool at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The position is 24 hours per week on rotating day/evening shifts with every other weekend required. Weekly Hours: 24 Benefit Eligibility: Part‑Time Benefits Eligible Expected Starting Salary Range: $37.00 – $43.02 per hour Benefits Tuition Free – Psychiatric Residency Enrichment Program Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training Job Responsibilities Milieu Management & Patient Safety Create a safe, stable environment using trauma‑informed approaches for patients with mood disorders, anxiety, psychosis, aggression, self‑harm, eating disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Implement token economies to reinforce positive behaviors. Prevent and respond to crises using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention strategies and, when necessary, physical interventions. Lead and intervene in behavioral crises per the Stress Model of Crisis and individual care plans. Conduct safety checks, room and patient searches, and monitor environmental risk factors. Maintain compliance with departmental policies, hospital protocols, and regulatory standards. Nursing Care & Clinical Judgment Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment to assess patient needs and develop care plans. Administer medications and monitor effectiveness. Coordinate and implement nursing interventions across physical and mental health needs. Provide support for activities of daily living in both group and individualized settings. Maintain observation levels with accuracy and compassion. Recognize changes in patient condition, respond to deteriorations, and elevate concerns. Group Programming & Therapeutic Engagement Lead or support structured group programming tailored to developmental needs. Engage patients meaningfully and observe behaviors to inform treatment progress. Build therapeutic rapport while maintaining professional boundaries. Compliance & Safety Leadership Stay current with accreditation and regulatory requirements. Complete certifications, licensure renewals, and Safety College trainings on schedule. Collaborate with nurse councils, Magnet representatives, and leadership to promote safety best practices. Report safety and compliance concerns promptly. Documentation & Communication Accurately document assessments, interventions, and incident reports. Review documentation from Behavioral Health Specialists for completeness and accuracy. Serve as the communication bridge between specialists and the interdisciplinary team. Participate in family‑centered rounds and provide updates to families. Use teach‑back strategies to support understanding of care goals. Contribute to shift reports, handoffs, and interdisciplinary care planning. Professional Development & Team Collaboration Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice RNs, social workers, allied health providers, and families. Assign safety checks, group facilitation, or patient support tasks and monitor completion. Engage in shared decision‑making through unit‑based councils or peer communication. Participate in performance reviews and clinical education. Support student and new nurse onboarding through mentorship. Collaborate across disciplines using the Interprofessional Practice Model. Cultural Competence & Advocacy Assess cultural factors and individual preferences impacting care and integrate them into practice. Advocate ethically for patients and families, especially when they cannot advocate for themselves. Qualifications Required Associate/Diploma RN from an ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA accredited institution. If hired as an external candidate without a BSN or MSN, enroll in a BSN or MSN program within 1 year of hire and complete within 5 years. Active Ohio RN License (other state licensure may be required). Foreign graduates must have license validated through TruMerit per Ohio Board of Nursing code for foreign graduates. Pass Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification Course during orientation. Preferred BSN from an ACEN or CCNE accredited institution or an MSN.
