Job Summary

Performs routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, cleaning/sanitizing and animal transportation. Observes and reports on animal behavior and environmental conditions and provides technical assistance to researchers and veterinary personnel. Checks for adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment and maintains stocks for facility users. Operates autoclaves and other equipment and ensures that equipment is in proper working order. Checks equipment operation daily and reports need for repairs. Maintains animal housing and conducts minor cage/rack maintenance. Maintains daily husbandry and health records. Drives state vehicles to transport animals and supplies, ensuring safe operation, daily inspection and vehicle cleanliness.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Prepare and perform analyses of laboratory samples

Job Duty 2 -
Setup, operate and maintain instruments and other equipment used in performing lab tests and experiments

Job Duty 3 -
Order supplies and materials as required; maintain records

Job Duty 4 -
Setup laboratory media/equipment for demonstrations

Job Duty 5 -
Clean instruments, glassware and other lab equipment, as necessary

Job Duty 6 -
Provide work direction to lower level technicians and assistance to lab participants, as necessary

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other duties as assigned Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Technical Diploma, Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Other Required Qualifications
Overnight travel requechnicianed for project delivery; flexibility in on-site daily service delivery hours (due to client shift schedules, project requechnicianements).

Required Experience
Two to three years of job related experience Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Application of required skills within a university environment is preferred

Preferred Educational Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree Preferred Qualifications

Three years of animal husbandry/care experience OR three years animal husbandry experience in a laboratory animal facility OR certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) AND two years of research animal husbandry/care experience. LAT and LATG certifications and additional education can fulfill requirements on a per case basis. The ability to lift 50 pounds and push/pull heavy loads. Positions in this classification require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record. Applicants must NOT own rodents at home NOR reptiles that consume rodents.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge in the use of instrumentation and other lab equipment, laboratory processes and procedures specific to assigned lab. Skills in inventory management and the use of specialized computer applications is required.

Responsibilities

• Feeds and cleans animal enclosures/housing systems.
• Observes and monitors animals for signs of illness, trauma or social instability.
• Monitors environmental conditions in animal housing rooms and inspects the condition of facilities and equipment for cleanliness and proper operation.
• Maintains daily records pertaining to animal care, environmental data and facility cleanliness/maintenance.
• Cleans and sanitizes facility spaces and rooms.
• Provides technical assistance to researchers.
• Participates in staff meetings, training classes, professional development and continuing education as directed.
• Complies with EHS standards and other applicable federal and state regulations when working with hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and power equipment.
• Comply with mandated minimum 40 hour work week; ability to work mandatory overtime and some weekends and holidays as required.
