Job Description

Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water lines, pump stations, water storage tanks, flushing hydrants, performing service orders, reading and maintaining water meters, collecting water samples, locating water lines, does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Water System Director.

Description of Work

Specific duties and responsibilities include reading water meters, processing service orders, assisting in the maintenance, repair and construction of the water system infrastructure, investigating customer concerns regarding water quality, providing customer service, inspecting and maintaining water system pumping stations, operating motorized equipment, performing general maintenance duties, and serving in emergency stand by capacity.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience involving the operation and maintenance of water systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special requirement: Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. Possession of or ability to obtain Backflow Cross Connection and Water Distribution certifications.

Physical requirements include operating a variety of equipment and machinery, exerting force, maintaining body equilibrium, and performing other physical tasks. Data conception, interpersonal communication, language ability, intelligence, verbal aptitude, numerical aptitude, form/spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, color discrimination, interpersonal temperament, and physical communication are also required. Knowledge of tools, materials, equipment, maintenance tasks, safety precautions, and operating characteristics are necessary. Ability to follow instructions, perform manual labor, prepare records and reports, and establish working relationships is essential.
