Job Summary The SLS Instructor provides one‑on‑one individual instruction and training to encourage independence at the highest possible level. SLS Instructors serve as advocates and liaisons on behalf of the individuals being supported. Our instructors strive to develop strong personal relationships with the individuals they support, assisting in maximizing the individual’s successful community integration. Location Mission Viejo, CA Responsibilities Employment Preparation: Provide supervision while acquiring skills necessary for successful employment, including personal appearance, hygiene, screening/application/interview process, building a network, resume preparation, time management, communication, working under direct supervision, and safety awareness. Communication Skills: Supervise and train the individual with facilitated communication devices, such as Braille, Sign Language, finger spelling, augmentative devices, and other adaptations. Provide training on using telephones, cell phones, and the internet. Mobility Training: Supervise and train on accessing public transportation, familiarizing with bus routes, DMV materials, and obtaining bus passes. Education Training: Supervise and train on enrolling in classes, applying for financial aid, selecting school/class, maintaining attendance, completing assignments, and encouraging participation. Training may include parent skills and family life education. Money Management: Supervise and train on budgeting, making change, purchasing, counting, and comparing prices. Self‑Help Skills: Supervise and train in basic hygiene tasks; provide assistance with bathing and dressing suitable for weather and environment. Environmental Awareness and Public Adaptation: Supervise and train on safely and confidently accessing public professionals, developing natural supports in all settings. Personal and Public Safety Skills: Supervise and train on recognizing stranger danger, distinguishing safe versus unsafe environments, and street safety. Emergency Preparedness: Supervise and train on remaining safe during emergencies such as fire or earthquake, and promote awareness of the use and purpose of 911 and emergency services. Community Resources Awareness: Supervise and support the individual in accessing public and community resources. Health and Fitness: Supervise, train, and support with diet programs, exercise, medical conditions, and healthy food choices. Provide supervision during medical appointments, communicate updates or concerns, and instruct on medication storage, documentation, and procedures. SLS Instructors do not administer medication. Health and Nutrition Skills: Supervise and train in dietary and nutritional recommendations; provide hand‑over‑hand assistance with feeding when necessary. Home Maintenance: Supervise and train on maintaining a safe and clean living environment and on completing necessary laundry tasks. Self‑Advocacy Skills: Supervise and support the individual in becoming aware of their rights, identifying rights violations, utilizing legal rights, and developing self‑reliance, self‑esteem, and empowerment. Living Options: Supervise and train on accessing Medi‑Cal benefits, applying for SSI, Medi‑Cal, scheduling and attending appointments, and completing immigration/citizen processes. Shopping Skills: Supervise and support grocery shopping in the community, assist in healthy food choices, budgeting, and price comparison. Knowledge, Skill, And Abilities At least 6 months of direct supervision experience working with individuals with developmental and disabilities populations. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general regulations. Ability to write legible and accurate notes relating to an individual’s goals and objectives. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the consumer, circle of support, Regional Center, and the general public. Ability to speak English; additional language skills based on individual needs are a plus. Ability to use independent judgment during services and emergencies. Possession of a cell phone for communication with management and completion of payroll responsibilities. Minimum Job Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; not required unless directed by state regulations. Experience: Additional experience with people with developmental disabilities preferred or required by regulations.
