Phlebotomist

Position Summary This is a contract job opportunity with potential for permanent placement. The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshoot, train, and make workflow recommendations. Responsibilities Experience in blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures. Explains the procedure of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine, fecal) in a clear, courteous manner. Demonstrates technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understands physician orders. Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order. Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy. Packages specimens for transport. Stores specimen samples according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labels, and follows procedures per protocol to maintain integrity for transport. Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attends annual department trainings. Answers telephone calls and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Minimum Qualifications Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced laboratory or hospital setting.
