Sign Language Interpreter

Job Summary The Sign Language Interpreter will provide interpreting and transliterating services for classroom, laboratory, and academic activities during study abroad semesters, ensuring equal access for students and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The position is full‑time, Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, with flexible availability for morning, afternoon, or weekend scheduling as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide interpreting and transliterating services and maintain a regular schedule for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students registered with the SAR Center. Accept regular or substitute disability accommodations assignments for Deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students as necessary. Attend and participate in interpreter‑related meetings, in‑service training, and workshops on and off campus. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High‑school diploma or GED and Sign Language Interpreter certification (RID/BEI) with at least five (5) years of general interpreting experience. Understanding and strict compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf/National Interpreter Certification/Board of Evaluation of Interpreters Code of Professional Conduct. Current U.S. passport. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or completion of an Interpreter Training Program. At least five (5) years general interpreting experience and two (2) years of continuous post‑secondary interpreter experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (AA, 2008) and the Rehabilitation Act (504) and their application to higher education. Flexible availability for morning/afternoon/weekend scheduling. Knowledge of Deaf culture and proficiency in both sign language and oral/voice interpreting. Fluency in American Sign Language and other sign systems (PSE, Cued Speech, SEE). Other Requirements Exposure to all weather conditions and standard office conditions. Exposure to standard interpreter use of arms and hands. Housing and living expenses are the responsibility of the employee.
