Occupational Therapist

The school-based occupational therapist supports students with disabilities in accessing the curriculum and school environment by addressing challenges related to fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-regulation, and functional independence. Working as part of the special education team, the occupational therapist evaluates students, develops Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, and delivers therapy in accordance with federal and state education laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Adheres to the policies and related directives of the East Providence School Department.
• Conducts occupational therapy evaluations as part of special education eligibility processes.
• Develops, implements, and monitors individualized occupational therapy services identified in students' IEPs or 504 plans.
• Provides direct and consultative occupational therapy services in a variety of school settings, including classrooms, the cafeteria, and the playground.
• Collaborates with teachers, parents, specialists, and administrators to integrate therapeutic strategies into the school day.
• Assists in developing accommodations, modifications, and strategies that promote student access to and participation in educational activities.
• Contributes to IEP meetings and completes progress reporting aligned with student goals and data collection in a timely fashion.
• Recommends and facilitates the use of adaptive equipment, tools, and environmental modifications to support access and function.
• Supports student transitions, including preschool to kindergarten and middle to high school, with planning focused on independence and readiness.
• Maintains accurate documentation in compliance with district policies, IDEA, Section 504, and Medicaid requirements as applicable.
• Maintains strict confidentiality regarding students, families, and student records.
• Participates in professional development and maintains current knowledge of best practices in school-based occupational therapy.
• Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Director and/or Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program.
• Valid occupational therapy license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
• Current certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
• Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and best practices in school-based occupational therapy.
• Must possess a high degree of tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
• Must be detail oriented with good organizational skills.
• Must be proficient with computers.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in school settings and working knowledge of the IEP process.
• Strong collaboration and consultation skills with multidisciplinary teams.
• Familiarity with assistive technology, sensory integration, and fine motor/visual motor programming.
• Understanding of trauma-informed practices, behavioral supports, and inclusive education.
