Work location: Livingston, NJ (on-site)Scope:The Director, Laboratory Services is responsible for the day-to-day leadership, management, and performance of the New Jersey Genomics Laboratory. This role ensures safe, compliant, efficient, and customer-focused laboratory operations through effective management of personnel, workflows, quality systems, and operational performance.The Director, Laboratory Services partners closely with, Quality, Medical and Scientific Leadership, Engineering, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and other support functions to ensure testing services are delivered in accordance with established quality, turnaround time, productivity, and regulatory standards.Job Summary:The Director, Laboratory Services, is accountable for the daily operation of the NJ Genomics Laboratory, including operational performance, staffing, product quality, safety, productivity, and employee engagement. This position provides direct leadership to laboratory managers, supervisors, and staff and ensures alignment with organizational goals and performance expectations.The Director monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) and serves as the primary on-site leader responsible for maintaining consistent execution, regulatory compliance, and a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Demonstrated experience leading high-volume clinical laboratory operations. Strong understanding of genomics and molecular diagnostics workflows. Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills. Excellent communication, collaboration, and conflict-resolution abilities. Proven ability to drive accountability and operational performance. Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, NYSDOH, OSHA, ISO15189, and related regulatory requirements. Strong problem-solving and root-cause investigation skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong financial and operational acumen. Proficiency with laboratory information systems, operational reporting, and Microsoft Office applications.Work Environment:Office setting with prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer may be required. Flexibility to adjust work schedules to meet business needs, including occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays. Experience:Minimum 7–10 years of experience in clinical laboratory operations. Minimum 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience managing managers and/or supervisors. The actual base pay includes many factors and is subject to change and modification in the future. This position may also be eligible for other types of compensation and benefits.Provide overall leadership and oversight of daily laboratory operations. Ensure testing activities are performed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures. Monitor and manage laboratory performance metrics, including turnaround time (TAT), throughput, productivity, staffing utilization and quality indicators Drive achievement of operational goals and service level commitments. Lead daily operational reviews and prioritize resources to meet business demands. Escalate and resolve operational issues that may impact quality, customer service, or delivery timelines.Lead, develop, and mentor laboratory managers, supervisors, and staff. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, engagement, and continuous improvement. Manage employee performance, coaching, development planning, and corrective action activities. Partner with Human Resources on recruiting, retention, employee relations, and workforce planning. Develop staffing plans to ensure appropriate coverage and operational continuity.Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, NYSDOH, OSHA, and applicable regulatory requirements. Partner with Quality and Scientific Leadership to support inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.Ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained following quality events or operational deviations.Foster a quality-focused culture where issues are identified, escalated, and resolved appropriately.Support implementation of new technologies, workflows, and operational initiatives. Partner with Engineering, Supply Chain, and Informatics teams to improve reliability and system performance.Manage department budgets and operational expenses. Ensure effective utilization of equipment, personnel, and laboratory resources. Support productivity and cost-management initiatives. Identify operational risks and resource constraints and develop mitigation plans.Support after-hours operational escalation as required.
