Job Title: CNC Machinist Job Description

The CNC Machinist manufactures detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions using a variety of computer- and mechanically controlled machine tools. This role involves setting up and operating mills, lathes, CNC machine tools, grinders, and related equipment, performing precise measurements and inspections, and maintaining tight tolerances and quality standards in a clean, stable machine shop environment. Opportunities are available on day, swing, and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and maintain CNC milling and turning centers according to complex blueprints and specifications.

• Manufacture detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions using computer- or mechanically controlled machine tools and equipment.

• Set up and operate mills, lathes, CNC machine tools, grinders, and other machine equipment using mathematical and geometrical calculations.

• Retrieve job-related information, including job routings, part drawings, tool lists, and work instructions.

• Select and utilize appropriate cutting tools and work holding for various materials and machining processes.

• Install, align, secure, and adjust cutting tools and workpieces to meet machining requirements.

• Monitor machine feed and speed to ensure optimal performance and part quality.

• Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers to check and maintain tolerances.

• Calculate dimensions using measuring instruments and verify conformance to specifications.

• Measure, examine, and inspect completed products for defects and ensure all surfaces conform to specifications.

• Perform precise measurements and inspections to ensure parts meet stringent quality control standards, including GD&T requirements.

• Document manufactured quantities and all required processes using an ERP system.

• Perform machine setup for stable, repeat-production parts and may assist with more complex or prototype machining operations.

• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize machining efficiency and reduce waste.

• Assist in developing new machining methods and tooling for complex parts when needed.

• Maintain a clean and safe work area, adhering to all safety protocols and housekeeping standards.

• Understand and obey all safety requirements and use equipment and tools in a safe manner.

• Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to support production goals.

• Perform other duties as assigned to support machining operations and shop productivity.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 5+ years of machinist experience, including CNC milling and turning operations.

• Proven ability to set up, operate, and maintain CNC mills and lathes for production parts.

• Strong experience with machine setup, including selecting and installing tooling and work holding.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and part drawings.

• Ability to perform CNC program edits and adjust G-code as needed for optimal machining.

• Hands-on experience with vertical and horizontal mills and multi-axis CNC equipment.

• Skilled in using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.

• Working knowledge of GD&T and its application in part inspection and quality control.

• Experience with CMM operation and inspection processes is strongly preferred.

• Ability to perform detailed inspections to ensure parts meet customer specifications and stringent quality standards.

• Working knowledge of customer specifications and requirements in a machine shop environment.

• Mastery of basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.

• Basic computer skills for accessing routings, drawings, and documenting work in an ERP system.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of machining and documentation.

• Effective problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot machining issues and improve processes.

• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with co-workers.

• Ability to understand and follow safety requirements and maintain a safe work environment.

• Commitment to keeping the work area clean and free of debris.

• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds as part of daily duties.

• Capability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.

• Adequate vision for close and distance work, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed inspections.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus advanced training in machining or CNC operations.

• Experience working in a machine shop environment with CNC mills, lathes, and grinders.

• Familiarity with machining a variety of materials using appropriate cutting tools and work holding methods.

• Experience with machine operating and machine operation in a production setting.

• Knowledge of G-code and CNC programming concepts, including basic program edits.

• Exposure to prototype or experimental machining operations is a plus.

• Ability to use coordinate measuring machines (CMM) for inspection is beneficial.

• Understanding of ITAR compliance requirements and ability to work within regulated environments.

• Comfort working with ERP systems to document quantities, processes, and job status.

• Demonstrated ability to participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

• Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset.

• Willingness to work day, swing, or weekend shifts as needed.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very large, clean, and stable machine shop environment equipped with CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and CMMs. Work involves standing for extended periods, frequent use of hands and arms to operate machines and handle parts, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed inspection work. Multiple shifts are available: Day shift runs from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Swing shift runs from 4:30 p.m. to 2:45 a.m., Monday through Thursday, with a shift differential; Weekend shift runs from 5:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday, with a higher shift differential. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Plains, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
