Academic Advisor I
Lake-Sumter State College
The Academic Advisor (AA) promotes student success and completion by providing proactive, developmental advising and personalized support across academic and career pathways. They guide students through course selection, policy interpretation, and graduation planning while maintaining detailed advising records and leveraging tools like TargetX and Canvas. The role includes outreach, early alerts, orientation support, and targeted retention strategies, especially for at-risk populations.
Responsible for demonstrating LSSCs core values of Caring, Communicating, Collaborating, and Celebrating when interacting with students, employees, visitors, and community members.

- Utilize intentional developmental advising methods focused on student success, skill development, and lifelong learning.
- Maintain a historic record of all individual academic advising session notes and materials.
- Communicate with advisees using the latest technology, including Target X and Canvas.
- Assist students with course selection, information related to initial transfer credit review, academic program requirements, interpretation of institutional policies and procedures, and graduation audits.
- Provide evening advising one evening a week.
- Serve as a referral agent for students in academic distress, which includes monitoring and record keeping via LSSCs early alert systems.
- Engage in outreach efforts.
- Communicate effectively with current and prospective students, community members, and college employees, in person, by phone, in writing, and by appropriate electronic means, adhering to the privacy of student records requirements (FERPA). Delivers Academic Advising presentations aimed at reinforcing student academic and career exploration for AA, AS, Certificate, and Baccalaureate students.
- Assist with the delivery of departmental advising services, including new student orientation, recruitment, and intrusive advising strategies focused on at-risk populations.
- Participate in College retention efforts; implement student success strategies for specific target populations and or student roster group(s), and provide ongoing support for students on academic probation.
- Participate in data collection for the Colleges continuous improvement initiatives and accreditation compliance.
- Participate in the assessment of measurable learning outcomes.
- Contribute to department and division strategic planning and program review initiatives.
- May oversee the recruitment, hiring, and training process for Student Assistants.
- Supervise their hours, workload, and payment processing.
- Serve on department and college-wide committees, councils, and work groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively facilitate advising and recruitment workshops and/or presentations to both large and small audiences.
- Ability to maintain good working relations with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Demonstrate good organizational skills and leadership ability, ability to work independently on a variety of assignments simultaneously, with attention to detail, and with a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to collect, code, and analyze data for assessment and evaluation purposes.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Ability to utilize multiple computer applications to access and record student information.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

- Ability to work various hours, including nights, early mornings, and weekends
- Ability to travel amongst various campuses and attend College events, on or off campus, as required.
- Required :
- Bachelor's Degree + 4 or more years of related experience or Master's Degree + 2 or more years of related experience.
- Preferred :
- Experience with higher education student services.
JOB STATUSES AND CRITERIA:
Academic Advisor I (AA I)
- Requirements: Bachelor's Degree + 4 or more years of related experience or Master's Degree + 2 or more years of related experience.
- Promotion to AA II: AA I employees in good standing (satisfactory or above on annual performance evaluations) for 2 consecutive years must submit a written request to the VP-ESA and department head outlining accomplishments, professional development, and career interests. Professional Development must include the successful completion of UCFs Coach Practitioner Class and an approved NACADA microcredential. Promotions will take place in August or January, whichever comes first, pending approved budgets.
Academic Advisor II (AA II )
- Requirements: Good standing in the AA I role for 2 years.
- Promotion to SAA: AA II employees in good standing (satisfactory or above on annual performance evaluations) for 2 consecutive years must submit a written request to the VP-ESA and department head outlining accomplishments, professional development, and career interests. Professional Development must include the successful completion of UCFs Coach Professional Class and an approved NACADA microcredential. Promotions will take place in August or January, whichever comes first, pending approved budgets.
Senior Academic Advisor (SAA)
- Requirements: Commitment to additional professional development, peer training, supervision of student assistants, and coordination of special projects.
