Position Aquatic Center Swimming Instructor (WSI) Location East Kentwood High School Date Posted 7/20/2026 Closing Date 07/27/2026 Position Purpose Provide swim lessons—private or group—to children and adults of all levels and abilities based on American Red Cross (ARC) standards and program requirements. Follow the ARC creed of ensuring patron safety and protecting lives. Essential Functions Represent Kentwood Public Schools and the KPS Aquatic Center by maintaining a professional attitude in keeping with the department’s mission. Instruct swim lesson participants. Maintain the safety of participants in and around the class. Co‑teach certain classes with other instructors. Evaluate students participating in swim lessons. Submit completed report cards and skill sheets on time. Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled. Communicate effectively with lifeguards on duty, the Manager, and the Director of Aquatics, and act as a team in an emergency. Deliver excellent customer service to all facility users and serve our diverse population. Handle all incidents in a manner appropriate to your training. First Aid is to be handled by the Lifeguard unless it is life‑threatening. Recommend all injured patrons seek professional medical attention. Assist the Swim Lessons Coordinator in keeping the community informed of pool activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills per the standards of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual. Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment. Patience and ability to help all students progress at their own pace. Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Communication skills. Decision‑making skills. Qualifications CPR Certified. Current certification as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or other equivalent aquatic teaching/swim lessons certificate (will need to cross over to Red Cross). Lifeguard certification strongly recommended, but not required.
