Job Description The Lifeguard is responsible for the lives and safety of all patrons in the aquatic facility while on duty. Lifeguard must exhibit enthusiasm and dedication to their work. This position will also be required to complete daily maintenance of the pool/facility teach swim lessons and respond to questions and inquiries from the public. This position will be responsible for providing customer service at the front desk of the facility. Also responsible for monitoring all access into facility handling admissions point of sale transactions and assisting in the cleanliness of the front desk area and lobby. The job may require shifts ranging from morning to evening hours weekends and holidays. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Tools and Equipment Personal computer; telephone; copy machine; printer; calculator. Physical Demands All Lifeguards must remain alert and be able to easily move through all program areas and effectively communicate and interact with customers throughout shift. Must be able to hear noises and see distressed victims and respond to needs in appropriate and safe manner. Lifeguards must be able to stand; sit; walk; reach with arms and hands; climb; balance and kneel for periods of time. Lifeguards should be able to perform the following rescues: active and passive rescue; submerged passive rescue and in-line stabilization for head; neck or back injury. All rescues should be performed at a high level of confidence and demonstrated regularly for management team. Work Environment The work environment is in and around water and slippery surfaces with exposure to noise; fumes and hazardous chemicals. While performing the duties of this job; the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high; precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the environment is often noisy and loud. Selection Guidelines Formal application rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check; background check; job related tests may be required including CPR/First Aid skills check and lifeguard skills check.

- Responsible for the safety of all patrons in the entire pool area including locker rooms and cabanas.
- Be at assigned station or guard stand at all times except when attending to a rescue or incident as needed.
- Superior customer service to all patrons as they walk into facility by greeting and welcoming them; answering questions and providing answers as needed.
- Take registrations for swim lessons; aquatic programs; birthday parties; retail sales; memberships and daily admissions.
- Must be punctual and rescue ready for duty at assigned time.
- Know and enforce all pool rules and regulations of the Woodland Aquatic Center in a firm; but polite manner.
- Maintain safety; discipline; and constant surveillance in and around the pool area and locker rooms.
- Wear City uniform; shirt; hip pack; whistle and keep neat and clean at all times.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies in and around the pool area by reacting quickly and calmly.
- Perform necessary First Aid and fill out appropriate reports.
- Know procedures for first aid and emergencies; including necessary paperwork and administer first aid when appropriate following appropriate Emergency Action Procedure (EAP).
- Ensure all rescue equipment is in working order prior to the opening of the pool and pool area.
- Maintain personal swimming fitness.
- Request time off in appropriate manner.
- Employ appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) from other health hazards associated with job responsibilities.
- Be professional at all times especially when enforcing rules; policies and procedures.
- Be alert to surroundings and check assignment board when time allows.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Check/monitor pool chemicals at designated times per direction of manager and immediately report any concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to verbally and effectively communicate with City staff; general public and outside vendors.
- Ability to multiple task and handle stressful situations.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to accurately record and maintain records relating to inspection and maintenance activities.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to meet the Physical Demands and willingness to function in the work environment as listed.
- Knowledge of computers; phones; basic office equipment and credit card machine preferred
- Must have current Lifeguard Certification (ARC preferred but will accept YMCA; Starfish and Ellis and Associates).
- Must have thorough knowledge of lifeguarding and surveillance rescue skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with public and co-workers.
- Must be able to make sound decisions on a daily basis.
- Knowledge and enforcement of pool rules and facility rules is a must.
- WSI preferred or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to work as a team member.
