Position Overview

We are seeking a highly analytical, detail-obsessed, and systems-minded Software Engineer to join our core centralized Engineering collective in a full-time remote capacity across Canada. Operating within our cross-cutting features and optimization pods, you will step up to claim true individual strategic and operational accountability across the entire product lifecycle—programming both our open-source client codebase and the high-performance backend services driving our core platform. Shifting completely away from routine front-end layout tweaking, minor script editing, basic content management adjustments, or passive task tracking, you will run an intense network engineering lab—partnering face-to-face with UX/UI designers, product managers, and distributed core infrastructure groups to convert abstract performance needs into resilient mesh mechanisms. This position requires an internet technology or distributed systems veteran who architectures complex backend data layers fluidly natively using Backend code models, structures performant data queries smoothly natively using SQL parameters, and commands low-latency socket programming and operating system routing loops confidently under strict production deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

• Full-Lifecycle Networking Feature Development: Design, develop, and maintain high-signal networking features and code optimizations across Tailscale core product lines, contributing to open-source repository nodes and backend systems cleanly natively utilizing Backend architectural standards.
• End-to-End Product Lifecycle Ownership: Drive features from early-stage conceptual ideation, technical validation, and strategic decision-making through to clean production code writing, deployment, and customer-facing asset validation.
• Operating System Internals Integration: Implement and manage low-level network components, working fluidly inside operating system internals to handle complex socket programming, manipulation of routing tables, and kernel packet filtering primitives.
• Distributed Systems Scalability Tuning: Analyze, audit, and maximize the efficiency, scalability, and absolute runtime stability of all connected networking systems, databases, and multi-tenant overlay routing clusters.
• Asynchronous Concurrency Management: Engineer server-side data synchronization routines, handling thread synchronization patterns, avoiding race conditions, and enforcing rigid system-level memory management patterns cleanly natively using Backend structures in Go (Golang).
• Relentless Relational Schema Ingestion: Formulate, optimize, and manage highly performant relational databases, indexing transactional data structures smoothly natively using SQL metrics across PostgreSQL or MySQL engines.
• Security-First Engineering Architecture: Infuse an absolute security-first ideology into the complete design, test, and implementation track, ensuring core connectivity software components are insulated against modern threat vectors.
• Production Observability and Support Governance: Take absolute personal ownership over the running microservices comprising our product stack, constructing end-to-end telemetry frameworks, participating in incident response cadences, and fielding critical client support escalations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• A minimum of 4 to 6 years of verified professional history running advanced systems software engineering, distributed application programming, low-level network protocol development, infrastructure engineering, or technical infrastructure consulting.
• Mandatory Programming Language Mastery: Proven, hands-on portfolio history demonstrating deep technical development experience explicitly utilizing Go (Golang) within commercial, production-scale settings.
• Expert-tier capability writing decoupled backend modules, implementing multi-threaded processes, and debugging distributed architectures natively utilizing Backend code logic.
• Practical operational familiarity organizing relational databases, optimization of complex join queries, and configuring tables natively using SQL parameters.
• Authoritative technical grasp of application-layer networking fundamentals, showing proven success deploying overlay routing layers, proxies, tunnels, and distributed application connectors.
• Outstanding written, verbal, and scannable communication traits in fluent English, enabling total clarity when presenting complex architectural data abstractions or collaborating asynchronously across distributed engineering cohorts.
