Job Title: Pre-Engineered Metal Panel Installer / Steel Erector

Job Description

This role involves installing pre-engineered metal wall and roof panels on large commercial and data center projects, with a strong focus on structural steel erection and exterior panel systems. You will work primarily on the exterior of facilities using impacts, steel-erecting tools, and scissor lifts, while closely following project specifications, safety standards, and construction drawings. The position requires comfort working at heights, in active construction zones, and in varying weather conditions, as well as the ability to perform physically demanding tasks as part of a coordinated field crew.

Responsibilities

• Install pre-engineered metal wall and roof panels according to project specifications, construction drawings, and manufacturer guidelines.
• Assist with the layout, alignment, and fastening of structural components to ensure accurate and secure installation.
• Use steel-erecting tools such as impact wrenches, torque tools, shears, snips, grinders, and panel lifting equipment safely and effectively.
• Operate scissor lifts, aerial lifts, ladders, and scaffolding to perform work at heights while following all safety protocols.
• Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and installation instructions to complete tasks accurately and efficiently.
• Coordinate with foremen and crew members to maintain workflow, meet project deadlines, and support overall project productivity.
• Perform material handling, staging, and organization of panels, hardware, and structural components to keep the job site efficient and orderly.
• Assist with site cleanup, debris removal, and general labor tasks to maintain a safe and clean work area.
• Inspect installed components for quality, accuracy, and compliance with project standards and specifications.
• Support steel erection activities, including positioning, aligning, and securing structural steel and related elements.
• Follow all OSHA and site-specific safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and fall protection.
• Travel as needed to multiple projects across the nation, reporting through the West Des Moines, IA field office as required.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience erecting pre-engineered metal buildings or similar metal building systems.
• At least 1 year of experience using power tools and hand tools such as impacts, torque tools, shears, snips, and grinders.
• At least 1 year of experience working on scissor lifts or similar aerial lift equipment.
• OSHA 10 certification.
• Previous experience installing metal panels, steel structures, or comparable construction systems.
• Proficiency with steel-erecting and metal-fabrication tools and equipment.
• Comfort and demonstrated ability working at heights on lifts, ladders, scaffolding, and open-frame structures.
• Ability to work safely and effectively in varying weather conditions, including cold, heat, and high winds when permitted.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail when aligning, fastening, and inspecting structural components.
• Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks such as carrying materials, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
• Reliable transportation and consistent, dependable attendance.
• Ability to work as part of a team on large-scale commercial or industrial projects, coordinating with multiple trades.
• Willingness and ability to travel to project sites across the nation as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working on data center or other large-scale commercial or industrial construction projects.
• Experience in general labor, iron work, structural steel erection, construction, fabrication, welding, roofing, or equipment installation.
• Familiarity with reading and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and detailed installation instructions.
• Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with foremen, steel erectors, carpenters, and other trades.
• Proactive approach to safety and quality, including identifying issues and reporting them promptly.
• Ability to adapt to fast-paced, production-driven environments and adjust to shifting priorities as project phases progress.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, onsite field position based out of a West Des Moines, IA field office, with work performed on active construction sites and data center projects. Typical work hours run Monday through Saturday from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, with early start times and long days common, especially during peak construction seasons. Work takes place outdoors year-round with exposure to variable weather conditions, including cold winters, high winds, and hot, dry summers; high winds may result in site shutdowns for safety. The environment is physically demanding and includes lifting heavy materials, climbing ladders, working at heights, standing for long periods, and moving frequently between tasks and work areas. You will work in active construction zones with heavy equipment, steel erection activities, and multiple trades operating simultaneously, in a fast-paced, production-driven setting where schedules are tight. Strict adherence to OSHA and site-specific safety protocols is required, with mandatory use of personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility gear, and fall-protection equipment. Daily work involves frequent use of steel-erecting tools, impacts, torque tools, shears, grinders, and panel lifting equipment, as well as scissor lifts, aerial lifts, ladders, and scaffolding. Work areas include metal building frames, roof structures, and exterior wall systems, requiring consistent comfort with heights and open-frame structures, and a strong focus on teamwork and coordination with foremen and other trades to maintain safe, efficient operations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of WDM, IA.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
