Position Type: Support Staff/ School Nurse RN Date Posted: 9/1/2026 Location: Gavin School District 37 Date Available: 09/01/2026 Title: 1:1 Registered Nurse Reports To: Administration Supervises: Students Department: District Classification: Certified Work Year: Determined on an as needed basis Contract Dates: School Year FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Evaluation: Per GEA Contract Current CPR/AED or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association Prior professional experience providing tracheostomy care required Demonstrated competency in tracheostomy assessment, suctioning, routine tracheostomy care, emergency tracheostomy replacement, oxygen administration, and recognition of respiratory distress Pediatric nursing experience, particularly with medically fragile students or students with disabilities, strongly preferred Competency in current medical technology and respiratory equipment Computer literacy and ability to maintain accurate electronic documentation Effective communication and collaboration skills Fluency in English and Spanish preferred Purpose: The registered nurse will provide continuous 1:1 nursing care for a student with a tracheostomy during the school day. The nurse will work under the administrative supervision of the principal and district administration while independently applying professional nursing judgment within the nurse's legal scope of practice. The assignment may include transportation to and from school, field trips, mobility trips, community-based instruction, and other school-sponsored activities. Gavin School District will provide or arrange student-specific orientation and ensure that required competencies are verified before the nurse independently assumes the assignment. MAJOR DUTIES & PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES Student-Specific Clinical Care Provide continuous nursing monitoring and support according to the student's healthcare-provider orders, Individualized Healthcare Plan, Emergency Care Plan, and IEP or Section 504 Plan. Assess the student's respiratory status, including work of breathing, airway patency, secretion amount and characteristics, skin color, breath sounds, oxygen saturation when ordered, and response to activity. Perform tracheostomy suctioning, routine tracheostomy and stoma care, oxygen administration, medication administration, enteral feedings, and other prescribed nursing procedures. Monitor the tracheostomy tube, ties, humidification system, suction equipment, oxygen equipment, and other medical devices. Maintain immediate access to the student's emergency tracheostomy bag, replacement tracheostomy tubes, suction equipment, manual resuscitation bag, oxygen, and other required supplies. Respond immediately to respiratory distress, mucus plugging, airway obstruction, accidental decannulation, aspiration, bleeding, equipment malfunction, oxygen desaturation, or other medical emergencies. Perform emergency tracheostomy replacement, CPR, and other emergency interventions according to verified competency, healthcare-provider orders, and the student's Emergency Care Plan. Accompany and monitor the student during classroom instruction, meals, therapies, toileting, transitions, emergency drills, transportation, field trips, mobility trips, and other school activities as assigned. Promote the student's safety, dignity, independence, communication, and participation in the educational program. Document nursing assessments, treatments, interventions, student responses, and communication accurately and promptly. General Clinical Practice Provide direct nursing services, first aid, illness care, and emergency care to the assigned student and assist in other student emergencies when doing so does not compromise the assigned student's safety. Administer medications, routine tests, and treatments in accordance with healthcare-provider orders and Gavin School District policies and procedures. Maintain accurate health records and required medical documentation. Assist with developing, reviewing, and implementing the student's Individualized Healthcare Plan and Emergency Care Plan. Provide relevant health information and guidance to the student, parent or guardian, and appropriate school staff. Recommend appropriate modifications or precautions when the student's medical condition affects participation in the educational program. Make appropriate assessments and reports regarding suspected abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter. Immediately communicate any unclear, incomplete, conflicting, or expired healthcare-provider orders to district administration and the student's parent or guardian. The nurse will not perform a nonemergency procedure without a valid order when an order is required. Coordination and Communication Work cooperatively with the principal, district administration, teachers, therapists, transportation personnel, parent or guardian, healthcare providers, and private-duty or agency nursing personnel when applicable. Promptly communicate significant changes in the student's condition to the parent or guardian and district administration and contact the healthcare provider or emergency medical services when indicated. Serve as a liaison among the student's home, school, healthcare providers, community agencies, and nursing agency when applicable. Participate in staffings, case reviews, annual reviews, parent conferences, faculty meetings, and other meetings as assigned. Assist with planning for transportation, field trips, emergency drills, evacuations, lockdowns, and other situations requiring continuity of nursing care. Protect student confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy requirements and Gavin School District policies. Follow infection-prevention practices, standard precautions, and bloodborne-pathogen procedures. Professional Responsibilities Maintain an active Illinois RN license and satisfy applicable continuing-education requirements. Maintain current CPR/AED or BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association. Maintain competency in tracheostomy care, respiratory assessment, emergency airway management, and all student-specific procedures. Attend required meetings, training sessions, competency reviews, and professional-development activities. Provide staff education regarding recognition of the student's medical emergencies, activation of emergency procedures, and location of emergency equipment as directed. Maintain reliable daily attendance due to the student's need for continuous nursing services. Notify the principal and district administration promptly when unable to report so qualified nursing coverage can be arranged. Provide a complete nursing handoff to any qualified substitute or covering nurse. Perform other duties assigned by the principal or district administration, provided those duties fall within the nurse's legal scope of practice and do not compromise the safety or continuous monitoring of the assigned student. Student-specific training and demonstrated competency must be completed before the nurse independently assumes responsibility for the student's care. When qualified nursing coverage is unavailable, district administration will follow the student's educational and healthcare plans and applicable requirements to determine how the student's needs can be safely met. Ability The employee shall lead, plan, develop, implement, deliver, and evaluate the district's curriculum and address identified deficiencies; engage in the collaborative dialogue with peers; maintain records and prepare reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; read, interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures; meet the requirements of schedules and timelines; take professional initiative; plan and organize work independently; develop effective staff development; read a variety of materials; efficiently employ differentiated leadership methods; learn new methods of leadership through ongoing professional development; implement a student centered approach to discipline, problem-solving and conflict-resolution; ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other certified and non-certified personnel, parents, and community members. Education/Preparation The employee shall possess the equivalent of a Master's Degree; completion of a leadership preparation program through an accredited university or college; successful completion of State proficiency exams; and possess/maintain appropriate licensure through the State of Illinois. Reasoning The employee must have the ability to solve complex problems in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions provided through written and oral form.
