Teacher Assistant Orange County Schools 330 - New Hope Elementary School – Chapel Hill, North Carolina Job Details Job ID: 5765807 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: Jun 08, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Position Title: Teacher Assistant School/Department: Assigned school/classroom(s) Salary: Salary Grade 56 + supplement FLSA Status: Non Exempt Reports To: Assigned Teacher/Principal Supervises: None Work Week Schedule: Monday – Friday Work Hours: 40 Number of Months per Year: 10 Position Purpose: The Teacher Assistant performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work, assisting classroom teachers or other professionals in achieving instructional objectives; assisting students with disabilities in achieving established goals; and providing personal care and mobility assistance. Further, the Teacher Assistant provides individual assistance with academic and behavioral problems and may lead small‑group activities as directed. The Teacher Assistant assists the supervising teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties. Essential Job Functions Assists the teacher with executing instructions and evaluating their effectiveness. Constantly monitors the safety and well‑being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self‑esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent. Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time‑out and class suspension; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed. Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one‑on‑one assistance as needed. Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students. Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom; performs repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment. Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; orders supplies; maintains class files, etc. Minimum Education High School diploma Minimum of 48 hours of college‑level coursework. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required. Less than 48 credit hours, complete the Workkeys Assessment Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities Spanish speaking Preferred Qualifications Associate Degree Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in a classroom/environment Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist teacher(s) with executing instruction and evaluating their effectiveness Constantly monitor the safety and well‑being of students Monitor student attitudes and encourage self‑esteem Monitor student behavior and help maintain discipline in the classroom Record time‑out and in‑class suspension Assist students with learning; reinforce and clarify instructions as permitted Conduct short sessions on improving study skills Provides one‑on‑one assistance as needed Maintain standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students Perform general housekeeping duties associated with maintaining an orderly classroom Maintain records of student progress as instructed by the teacher Develop and file incident reports Assist the teacher with grading student papers and scoring tests as requested Serve as a test proctor as directed Check daily attendance Develop classroom display and instructional materials Maintain and operate audiovisual equipment Participates in staff development workshops and staff meetings as required Perform other duties as assigned by the Teacher and/or the Principal or Principal’s Designee General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency. Some knowledge of the curriculum for the grade. Ability to motivate students.
