Pre-K Teacher Assistant

Job Title: Pre-K Teacher Assistant Salary Schedule: Classified; CHCCS Salary Page Reports To: Principal and/or designee, usually the classroom teacher Salary Grade: 102 Work Location: Northside Elementary School FLSA Status: Non-exempt Work Schedule: 10 Month Position Summary Job Goal: To assist the teacher in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning class environment. To relieve the teacher of non‑teaching functions so that the teacher can focus on preparation, individualization, and evaluation. Essential Duties Assist the classroom teacher by working with individual students, small groups, or large groups, including but not limited to the following ways: Reinforce the learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher. Devise special strategies based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. Guide independent study, enrichment, or remedial activities set up and assigned by the teacher; engage in oral communication activities such as reading aloud. Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction. Correct assignments, supervise testing, and make‑up work as assigned by the teacher. Assist teachers with behavior management consistent with school policies. Keep the supervising teacher informed of any problem or special information about individual students. Communicate with, contact, and respond to parents as directed, maintaining confidentiality of student information. Supervise students during breakfast, lunch, bus duty, class, emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. Relieve the teacher for conferences and emergencies on a short‑term basis, as required. May accompany students to special classes and assist students or resource teacher as needed. May serve as a substitute teacher, if needed; serve as the chief source of information for substitute teachers. Perform classroom health procedures under the supervision of the school nurse. Perform clerical duties: check attendance, collect money, maintain bulletin boards, and care for classroom equipment. Participate in in‑service training programs as assigned. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information as expected of licensed teachers. May serve as a school crossing guard. Perform any other tasks as directed by the teacher or supervisor. Education/Experience Requirements Must have either 48 semester hours of education earned/passed, or 7 hours in core area and passing scores on WorkKeys tests for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, or 96 contact hours and WorkKeys tests for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. High School Diploma/GED required. Associate’s Degree preferred. Previous experience working with children preferred. Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform the basic operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds. Ability to perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
