Heavy Equipment Operator- Tire Shredder Facility (Suffolk)

Job Title Heavy Equipment Operator Operates heavy and complex equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, and yard tractors in a safe and effective manner. Safely and efficiently operates assigned equipment for loading, compacting, and handling solid waste. Depending on the location of the assignment, the operator may be required to: Compact, load, move, or transfer shredded tire waste. Inspects equipment for proper operating conditions and loose or worn parts; maintains basic fluid levels on assigned equipment; reports defects or damage to the appropriate authority. Observes instruments and surroundings while the vehicle is in motion. Directs traffic entering and exiting the work area using verbal commands and hand/arm signals. Responsible for the proper use, loading, operation, and cleanliness of equipment. Performs routine clerical duties such as completing station logs, field and time reports, and requisitions. Loads trailers in a safe and efficient manner. Participates in cleanup activities as directed. Ensures that assigned tasks are completed properly, safely, and in a timely manner. Qualifications Any combination equivalent to a high school graduation and three years in the operation of heavy construction equipment, with at least one year as the primary operator of assigned equipment. Essential Functions & Requirements Operate various types of heavy construction and/or earth‑moving equipment (70% of time). Perform minor/major maintenance and upkeep as required (20% of time). Conduct general cleaning of equipment (10% of time). Mental ability to read, write, and comprehend general instructions, safety procedures, and reports; driving skills; ability to operate machinery in close working conditions requiring good eye‑hand coordination; perform maintenance checks and minor maintenance on equipment; ability to use both hands and both feet to operate equipment pedals, levers, steering wheels, and buttons. Physical ability to sit and adapt to constant jerking motions for 8–10 hour shifts; ability to use a three‑point support system; reach and extend hands and arms above shoulder and in any direction. Manual dexterity to work with hand tools on equipment, surfaces, and components; ability to read, write, and comprehend general instructions and safety procedures. Physically able to hold and maneuver a water hose discharging at 75 psi and lift up to 80 lbs. with assistance. Requires working in adverse climatic conditions (dust, odor, heat, cold, rain, snow); wearing appropriate safety gear including steel‑shank boots. Must understand oral and written instructions to perform lock‑out on equipment as per safety policy; physical and mental capability to work in a confined area for extensive periods; ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force at all times and/or up to 30 lbs. of force frequently; able to climb, crouch, stoop, handle repetitive motion, walk, remain focused, aware, and communicate.
