Role
A Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product by managing and prioritizing the backlog to align with business goals and customer needs. They act as the key liaison between stakeholders and the delivery team, ensuring requirements are clearly defined and understood. They also make decisions on scope and priorities to guide the team toward delivering the most valuable outcomes. Key responsibilities:
• Owns the working backwards document and vision for feature releases
• Identifies gaps and charters new platform capabilities as required
• Makes use of research, user studies, metrics and competitive analysis to understand the platform and business needs for a platform product
• Compares features for competitive review to inform prioritization within a platform product release
Identifies innovations or performs test and learn experiments to create features that add more business and customer value for a platform product
• Participates with the business in customer research to inform platform product feature needs
• Contributes near-term input (quarterly) for the platform product portfolio and roadmap
• Makes trade-off decisions on platform product features
• Uses runtime metrics of their services in market as a feedback loop in to the backlog and balances the priorities against new feature requests
• Exhibits expertise within platform feature area and coordinates with interdependent teams
• Digests business customer requirements (user stories, use cases) and platform requirements for a platform feature set
• Has visibility into the design of the user experience
• Determines release goals for the platform and prioritizes assigned features according to business and platform value, adjusting throughout implementation as needed
• Continuously monitors feature development at the feature level
• Reviews product demo with the development team against acceptance criteria for the feature set
• Prepares launches and monitors platform performances, adoption, and operational health for feature sets
• Stays aligned with GTM plans for the feature set
• Identifies issues that will keep the platform features from delivering on time and/or with the desired requirements and communicates to leadership
• Supports and participates in post-launch reviews and ensures feedback is reincorporated into the feature
• Works with internal teams and customer service to identify, classify, and prioritize feature-level customer issues
• Develops and implements new metrics into measurement techniques; works with development teams to develop reports to monitor them
• Independently identifies and researches anomalous performance; escalates findings to senior management
• Coordinates internal forums to collect and identify feature-level development opportunities
• Owns and manages product documentation; enables self-service support and/or works to reduce overhead
• Identifies feature risks from business and customer feedback and in-depth analysis of operational performance; shares with senior leadership
• Establishes a network within the organization; begins to build internal and external networks
• Mentoring team members
• Assists with candidate selection and onboarding
• Experienced PO with proven track record working in financial services
• Understanding and experience of UK payment domestic clearing products/services, i.e. Bacs or Real time (FPS) payments
• Experienced in producing business requirements specification documents
• Be skilled performing the elicitation and analysis of business change, functional and non-functional requirements across a range of stakeholders, internal and external

2. Contributing to the Vision and Roadmap
o Regularly engage with Product Management to analyse market research and understand the business drivers that trigger work requests.
o Ensure that the vision and roadmap contain real value by representing the end user, their needs and experience of using the products.
o Assist with ART backlog prioritization by collaborating with key roles and stakeholders to guide the sequencing of features over time.
o Assist with communicating the vision and roadmap during planning events to ensure teams are aligned.
3. Managing and Prioritizing the Team Backlog
o Guide story creation by ensuring they are well-formed and aligned with product strategy, backlog refinement. Proven track record producing high quality user stories and acceptance criteria
o Clarify story details using product ownership tools and techniques such as user-story voice, INVEST, and BDD.
o Prioritize backlog items by regularly ordering backlog items according to their cost of delay, and communicate the sequence to the team
o Accept stories by validating that stories meet their Definition of Done to assure that quality is built in.
4. Support the Team in Delivering Value
o Balance stakeholder perspectives by receiving feedback and insights, understanding the drivers and collaborating with stakeholders and teams to make implementation decisions that produce the most favourable outcomes.
o Elaborate stories before and during the iteration to help the team increase velocity and shorten learning cycles.
o Attend and actively participate in team and ART events.
5. Getting and Applying Feedback
o Mitigate the risk of developing solutions with little value by collaborating with Product Management to define benefit hypotheses that drive implementation.
o Obtain feedback from customers and stakeholders that indicates how well the solutions meet their needs.
