Mentor a Youth in Foster Care

SAFE FAMILIES PLUS

Each year, an estimated 25,000 youth across the U.S. emancipate or " age out " of the foster care system, and are at risk of having few adult supports or job opportunities. Safe Families PLUS ( P roviding L asting U nconditional S upport) Mentors are key partners in helping older youth successfully transition to adulthood. Mentors are paired with a youth or young adult between the ages of 14 to 21, and are expected to commit to at least a year of meeting on a consistent basis (twice per month). Mentors provide a safety net to fall back on after leaving the child welfare system.

All Safe Families PLUS mentees have completed an application requesting a mentor, and have identified goals they would like support in. Some of the activities our mentors have assisted youth with:

Cooking and sewing classes
Applying to college
Seeing theater productions and movies
Exploring job opportunities
Learning how to drive
