Duties

Help

Serves as one of six (6) dentists providing clinical leadership, education and oversight to the dentists who provide direct patient care to inmates.

Responsible for one region within the BOP as determined by the Assistant Director/Medical Director.

Responsible for providing clinical oversight and mentoring of the Chief Dental Officers at the institutional level, thereby ensuring the delivery of health care services in accordance with BOP treatment guidelines and established scope of services.

Provides consultation and guidance to Chief Dental Officers on complex dental cases. Examples include making recommendations on placement of inmates requiring management of extensive maxillofacial trauma/fractures, management of oro-facial malignancies, fabrication of maxillofacial prosthetics, and other high-profile cases.

Responsible for the administrative supervision of the Regional Support Dentist.

Responsible for traveling throughout the respective region providing complex specialized dental services for inmates located at institutions within that region.

Along with all other correctional institutional employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Education:

Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure : Applicants must have passed National Board of Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

NOTE: ALL applicants MUST electronically upload proof of current, active and unrestricted license to practice dentistry and proof of successful completion from the National Board of Dental Examinations (NBDE) at the time you apply.

All qualified referred candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons. This process includes validation of medical examinations, education, internship and residency. Experience:

In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments.

Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.

AND

In addition to meeting the above basic requirement and licensure requirements, Applicants must have completed one year of full-time experience in professional dentistry work that is equivalent to the next lower grade level; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.

Some examples of qualifying experience are:
  • Experience and professional knowledge gained in dental school and or residency, and correctional work experience to properly evaluate the appropriateness of treatment planned and rendered.
  • Experience in making recommendations for inmates requiring management of extensive maxillofacial trauma/fractures, management of oro-facial malignancies, fabrication of maxillofacial prosthetics, and other high profile cases.
  • Experience developing programs to improve clinical services, such as, training programs, and linkages with universities and professional organizations.

Medical Requirement:

Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Additional information

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.

The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70-minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
