SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

The Welder is responsible for performing quality welds while meeting all quality and safety standards. Under ongoing supervision, welds, cleans cuts and grinds. Assists in the departmental housekeeping and safety efforts and works collaboratively with other members of the department and production counterparts to ensure production workflow.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safely and efficiently, use welding equipment such as welding machine, grinder and cutting torch.
• Cleans, grinds welds and finishes as required.
• Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
• Repair welds to required specifications.
• Use of tools for cutting and fitting offset.
• Perform x-ray quality welds.
• Properly identify (mark) pipe with the use of spray paint and or stamper.
• Inspects, cleans and performs basic preventative maintenance on welding tools and equipment.
• Identify and report any unsafe working conditions or equipment.
• Follows all OSHA safety requirements, work rules and instructions, ISO procedures, job safety analysis (JSAs) and company policies and promotes a safe culture.
• Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the lead or supervisor.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Complete and maintain all required paperwork.
• May provide support to the fabrication department.
• Participates in all inventories, safety meetings and ISO audits.
• Maintain housekeeping within all production, storage and waste areas.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Ability to pass a FCAW - 2G and/or 3G weld test.
• Ability to pass a SMAW - 2G, 3G and/or 7018 weld test.
• Must be able to maintain a welding certification.
• Must be able to operate a welding machine and grinder safely.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• FCAW certified

WORK HOURS / SHIFT:

• Work hours vary or change based on operational needs.
• Must be able to work on Saturdays and overtime as required.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

• One year certified welding experience in a heavy manufacturing environment is preferred.
• Current / valid certification in FCAW 2G and 3G and SMAW 2G, 3G and 7018 preferred.
• Two or more years of experience as a certified welder in a pipe manufacturing facility is highly preferred.

WELDER I - this level of Welder is responsible for performing quality welds requiring little or minimum experience and must be certified welders or be able to pass a weld test. Individuals in this position work with and around, and operate, various hand tools and welding equipment. Work normally is performed under close supervision; however, close supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. As work experience is gained and additional welding certifications are obtained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.

WELDER II - this level of Welder is responsible for performing duties described for a Welder I. This level of welder requires additional training, skills, certification, and experience and must receive the appropriate score on the plant specific Welder Level Card. Work normally is performed under limited to close supervision. As additional experience is gained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.


WELDER III - this level of Welder is responsible for performing duties described for a Welder II. This level of welder possesses advanced qualifications, experience, and must receive the appropriate score on the plant specific Welder Level Card. Work normally is performed under minimal supervision. Employees in this position may be responsible for providing on-the-job training to new employees.

• Standing: Remaining upright in a stationary position, particularly for sustained periods.
• Walking: Moving about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
• Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward downward or outward.
• Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw drag haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

• Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
• Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
• Stooping: Positions self to checking pipe this factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
• Kneeling/Crouching: Position self to checking pipe.
• Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling to holding stud stamps.
• Feeling Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin particularly that of fingertips.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately loudly or quickly
• Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas and information accurately, in written or diagram form.
• Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correct, having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sounds.

Physical Requirements

• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and /or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity

• The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures transcribing viewing a computer terminal extensive reading visual inspection involving small defects small parts and /or operation of machines (including inspection) using measurement devices and /or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Vision Requirements:

Up to 2/3 of time, the worker is required to have:

• The worker is required to have close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
• The worker is required to have color vision (ability to identify and distinguish color)
• The worker is required to have peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
• The worker is required to have depth perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)

Less than 1/3 of the time

• The worker is required to have distance vision (clear vison at 20 feet or more)
• The worker will not be required to have any special vision.

Weather Conditions

Over 2/3 of the time:

• The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements to the extremities or whole body.

Up to 2/3 of the time:

• The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
• The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.
• The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

• The worker frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.

• Loud noise (Examples metal can be manufacturing department large earth-moving equipment

• Very quiet conditions (example: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test)
• Quiet conditions (examples: library, private office)
• Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)

Supervision Received:

• Close Supervision: The incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions. Work is checked frequently.
