IMPORTANT: This position is for a current National Registry Paramedic-licensed individual willing to attend and graduate from the Fire Academy within six (6) months of hire. Fire Academy starts on September 28, 2026.
Wage and Benefits
Starting Wage: $20.00 per hour/40 hours per week while attending mandatory Fire Academy. The Fire Academy schedule is Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from September 28, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
Wage Range : Firefighter/Paramedic: $68,927 - $93,038 (when completed with the Fire Academy)

General Purpose
Performs advanced life support paramedic duties to protect the life and property of city residents. This position follows a paramedic-entry track: the employee is hired as a licensed paramedic and completes the required fire certifications, funded by the department, during the initial period of employment (see Minimum Qualifications). Must be able to drive and operate all fire and EMS apparatus.
Essential Task Functions
Paramedic / Emergency Medical
- Responds to emergency medical calls; operates the ambulance under emergency and routine conditions to transport patients to hospitals and other facilities; uses radio communications to send and receive information.
- Evaluates patient condition, injuries, and the scene, and provides advanced life support (ALS) patient care consistent with the current National Registry Paramedic scope of practice, Utah EMS protocols, and department medical direction.
- Monitors patient status and provides continuous care through transfer to the receiving facility.
- Prepares and submits patient care reports and related documentation.
Firefighter
- Responds to fire and emergency alarms as a member of a firefighting team; performs fire suppression, rescue, salvage, and overhaul; operates hose lines, nozzles, ladders, SCBA, and hand and power tools in both training and actual incidents.
- Receives ongoing classroom and field training in fire prevention, firefighting, hazardous materials, rescue, and related emergency operations, and participates in regular drills.
- Conducts fire prevention inspections and assists with fire investigations as assigned, and prepares related reports.
Firefighting duties are assumed as the required certifications are completed during the initial employment period.
Public Relations
- Participates in public presentations, station tours, community events, and outreach to promote fire safety and prevention.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience :
Required at the time of employment:
- High School Diploma, or equivalent
- Must be 18 years of age
Fire Certifications - to be completed within six (6) months of hire (department-funded)
- IFSAC Firefighter I and II.
- IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness.
- IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations.
- BLS/CPR certification.
Additional Certifications :
Must be obtained within 1 year of hire :
- NWCG Wildland Firefighter II (Red Card).
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- CEVO Ambulance.
IMPORTANT: Completion Requirement
Because the department funds the fire certifications listed above, continued employment is contingent on completing IFSAC Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations within six (6) months of hire. An employee who does not complete these certifications within the six-month period, or who separates from the department before completing them, may be subject to release and/or repayment of certification costs as set out in the offer letter and city policy.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Considerable knowledge of emergency medical care, medications, and the procedures used to sustain and prolong life in the field; emergency vehicle operation; and medical terminology. Working knowledge of firefighting methods, equipment, and maintenance, and of the codes, laws, and regulations related to fire prevention, developed through the certification process for paramedic-track employees.
Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions; work safely in dangerous, high-stress emergencies; perform strenuous physical labor under extreme conditions; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; work on-call and rotating shifts; and build effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
Special Qualifications :
Must have and maintain a valid State of Utah driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment and be deemed insurable.

Work Environment :
Work is performed in both controlled settings and outdoors, subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response is a normal part of the job, and many functions carry a high degree of hazard and uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of continued employment. The work requires memory for detail, emotional stability, sound judgment, and creative problem-solving, as well as continuous use of motor skills.
Supervision Received : Works under the close supervision of the Engineer, Captain, or designated shift supervisor.
