Assistant Director of Student Affairs (5156C) - School of Information

Responsibilities Academic Advising: Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides a full range of student services to all graduate students at the School of Information, with a particular emphasis for the MIMS program. Reviews student performance and delivers advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress, requirements for program completion, and course selection and sequencing. Advises faculty and staff on I School, Graduate Division, and University policies, procedures, and requirements for degree/program completion. Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions. Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination. Program Management: In collaboration with the Senior Director of Student Affairs, lead in planning school-wide events such as New Student Orientation, Final Project Showcase, Commencement, and other high-profile events. Manages fellowship disbursement and processing across all degree programs, including oversight of application process (for internal fellowships) and student advising as appropriate. Provides guidance and mentoring to junior staff on complex policy issues. Student Government: Works closely with student government associations and representatives from the MIMS program (IMSA), providing advice and support to students and representing student perspectives to the I School. Supports Senior Director of Student Affairs in planning and executing regular meetings with student government leaders (and other student experience staff members), provides insights and recommendations on student ideas and initiatives as needed. Policy Recommendations: Within the School of Information, provides and makes recommendations for the improvement for all degree programs and related areas. Assists Senior Director of Student Affairs and Assistant Dean on the formulation of School policy by advising them on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent. Works with Senior Director of Student Affairs, Assistant Dean, and Faculty Directors to develop and implement Degree Assessment plans for the MIMS degree program. Supervision: Supervises part-time student services staff, and work‑study students as needed. Development: Develop and participate in staff development, including working on special programs as assigned, attending classes which will enhance expertise in job areas, serve on departmental and campus‑wide committees as appropriate, and participate in activities that enhance the campus community and/or larger community to further University service. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Expert knowledge of relevant University‑specific systems, including, Campus Solutions, CMS, Berkeley Course Evaluations, GLOW, CalAnswers, and the bConnected suite. Expert knowledge of relevant software and systems (e.g. Excel) to manage large amounts of data. Expert knowledge of University and School principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Skills in judgment and decision‑making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Skilled ability in problem identification, reasoning, and development of original ideas to solve problems. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Familiarity with online degree program administration. Experience collaborating with student government representatives Familiarity with needs and expectations of professional master's students and academic doctoral students. Experience working with students in the field of Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or Information Management. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,200 to $83,200 yearly ($5,100.00 to $6,933.34 monthly); the full salary range for this title (STDT SVC ADVISOR 3 SV) is $61,200 to $105,200.00 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly. Other Information This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between UAW (United Auto Workers) and the University of California Regents for SV. Conviction History Background This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities. Berkeley does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
