The Conventional Machinist I may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.Essential FunctionsMachine parts to specifications using machine tools such as conventional lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, or drill pressCommunicate with engineering, supervisory, or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical informationMeasure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measurement instrumentsSet up, adjust, and operate all of the conventional machine tools, drill presses and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operationsAlign and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials into machinesMonitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining processStudy sample parts, blueprints, and drawings to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products up to geometric dimensional tolerancesSelect the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery workListen to operating machines or equipment in order to detect machine malfunctions and compensate for problemsAny other task assigned by supervisor or managementMinimum QualificationsExperience: 1+ year training in conventional machining involving both on-the-job experience and informal trainingKnowledge: Knowledge of various inspection equipment i.e. micrometers, calipers, height gages; Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations; Knowledge of Geometric Dimensional Tolerancing; Understanding of cutting tool Geometry; Knowledge of tooling and coordinationSkills/Abilities: Able to work quickly and efficiently through Process Improvement structure; Good verbal and written communication; Strong attention to detail and accurate record keepingEducation/Certification: High School Diploma or equivalentEligibility Requirement: This position may require access to Controlled Data or Information. Manufacturing operations may require the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, gowning, masks, hearing protectors, heel/wrist straps and any other required PPE. May be exposed to unusual environmental conditions such as loud noises, cold temperatures, confined spaces, dust or fumes.
