Summary The position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center. Qualifications Physical effort related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Physical effort related to movements such as walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods. Work conditions: lighting, heating, ventilation, weather exposure when working outdoors, temperature, dust, grease, soiling, noise, vibration, gases, fumes, hazards. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System. Job elements used: Equipment Assembly – Installation – Repair; Interpret Instructions – Specifications (blueprint reading); Materials Technical Practices; Troubleshooting; Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Experience requirements: A full year of work is considered 35–40 hours per week. All experience must include month and year start/end dates. Part‑time experience will be credited based on actual time spent. Applicants may receive credit for volunteer experience through national service programs or other organizations. Screen‑Out: The screen‑out element is WG‑2 or higher. Applicants who meet the screen‑out are considered for further rating; otherwise, they are eliminated. Remaining eligible applicants are rated against the remaining job elements. Responsibilities Lays out fabrication, installs hand and guard rails, room partitions and dividers, and removes and accomplishes repair of metal doors; analyzes automatic door operators; adjusts, repairs, and overhauls same and replaces door closers; metal sash balances. Fabricates, repairs, and installs window screens. Performs preventive maintenance or completes overhaul of items such as condensate sump circulating pumps and other pumps. Performs standard preventive maintenance and overhaul and evaluates and determines malfunction or problem areas and repairs more complex equipment and modifies equipment to meet required standards of performance. Repairs and overhauls building management equipment such as automatic floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, automatic pressure washers. Repairs and maintains engineering equipment such as power hacksaws, hand saws, drill presses, grinders, hoists. Repairs all types of power hand tools. Performs work of other trades such as touch‑up painting using pre‑mixed paints, patches plaster in small areas disrupted during repair work, installs piping and tubing on specified jobs not requiring plumbing mechanics. Makes simple sheet metal repairs and does miscellaneous wood work as needed. May be detailed to work odd shifts or overtime to accomplish maintenance or repairs to equipment critical to hospital function. Reads and interprets blueprints; makes safety and preventive inspections of utility in accordance with regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.
