The Opportunity
Greenwich House is seeking a compassionate and recovery-oriented Peer Specialist to join our Center for Resiliency and Wellness (CRW). This role focuses value of peer support to help individuals address behavioral health and psychosocial needs, strengthen coping skills, access resources, and work toward personally meaningful recovery goals.
The Peer Specialist maintains an assigned caseload and works collaboratively with clients using person-centered, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented practices. Through appropriate use of lived experience, mutuality, advocacy, and purposeful self-disclosure, the position promotes hope, self-determination, independence, and engagement in services while working as part of CRW’s multidisciplinary team.
This is an opportunity for a certified peer professional with strong case management skills to combine lived experience with practical service coordination and help clients move toward greater stability, wellness, and quality of life.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an assigned caseload and provide ongoing, person-centered case management and peer support services based on each client’s identified needs, strengths, preferences, and goals.
- Complete client engagement, needs assessments, service planning, follow-up, and coordination of care in collaboration with clients and the multidisciplinary team.
- Assist clients with accessing and maintaining public benefits, entitlements, health insurance, food resources, transportation, housing-related supports, vocational services, and other community resources.
- Provide referrals and linkages to behavioral health, substance use disorder, medical, social service, and community-based programs as appropriate.
- Advocate with and educate clients on how to advocate for themselves as they navigate healthcare providers, government agencies, benefits systems, and other service systems.
- Use lived experience appropriately and purposefully to build trust, promote hope, reduce stigma, and demonstrate that recovery is possible.
- Provide peer support grounded in mutuality, respect, shared decision-making, self-determination, and individual choice.
- Help clients identify strengths, recovery goals, coping strategies, wellness tools, triggers, and natural supports.
- Provide active listening and recovery-oriented support to clients experiencing anxiety, emotional distress, isolation, stigma, or other behavioral health challenges.
- Support clients in strengthening self-advocacy, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and independent living skills.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate peer support, recovery, wellness, and psychoeducational groups as assigned.
- Recognize changes in client presentation that may indicate increased behavioral health needs or safety concerns; provide supportive engagement and de-escalation within the scope of the role and follow CRW procedures for urgent concerns.
- Collaborate with clinicians, medical providers, care coordinators, and other members of the client’s support network when appropriate and with proper consent.
- Complete required case notes, service documentation, assessments, and other records accurately and within established program, agency, and regulatory timeframes.
- Participate in supervision, case conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, trainings, and program meetings as required.
- Maintain client confidentiality, professional boundaries, and the distinct values and principles of peer support while functioning as an integrated member of the CRW team.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, human services, behavioral health, or a related field required.
- Valid and current New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) Peer Specialist certification required.
- Lived experience with behavioral health challenges and recovery, with the ability and willingness to use that experience appropriately in a professional peer-support role.
- Experience providing case management, peer support, behavioral health, or human services strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of recovery-oriented, person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices.
- Knowledge of New York City behavioral health, public benefits, entitlement, and community service systems.
- Strong interpersonal, engagement, advocacy, organizational, written communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and behavioral health backgrounds.
