ABOUT THE STREET VENDOR PROJECT

Founded in 2001, the Street Vendor Project (SVP) is a grassroots membership-led organization working to defend the rights and achieve just working conditions of the community of workers, self-employed people and small business owners who make their living as vendors on the streets and sidewalks of New York City. Through direct leadership development, education, legal support, and strategic legislative advocacy, SVP builds power and community among vendors in the fight to legalize street vending.

ABOUT THE POSITION

SVP is seeking a dynamic Deputy Director to work closely with the Managing Director and the team to ensure smooth operation and deliver outstanding outcomes in the crucial programs the team runs. The vendor movement recently made history with the passage of the Street Vendor Reform; therefore, SVP is in a key moment of growth, and the Deputy Director will play a key role in this exciting moment.

We are seeking a new team member with experience working within multicultural, working class and immigrant communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Has at least five years' experience in leadership roles in nonprofit management;
• Relentlessly dedicated to building the power of working class, immigrant communities of color to incite transformative social and economic justice movement building;
• Excited about working across multiple cultures and is flexible and patient when communicating with people who speak different languages;
• A thoughtful communicator with excellent interpersonal, written, and public speaking skills;
• A team-player eager to collaborate with diverse, inter-generational, and multicultural stakeholders to achieve systemic change;
• Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting a team of middle managers with very different experience levels, learning styles, and communication styles;
• Knowledgeable of New York City organizing and political landscape, with particular attention to racial, economic, and gender equity;
• Able to read and assess the current political landscape and make strategic choices to advance SVP’s agenda;
• Committed to and knowledgeable of SVP’s mission and movement building, and enthusiastic about nurturing leadership growth among members.
• Demonstrate success in managing day-to-day operations and supervising team members.
• Self-managed and self-motivated individual who’s also detail oriented.
• Must be Bilingual in Spanish and English.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities of the Deputy Director include:

Day-to-day operation:

• Supervise, mentor and evaluate middle managers who are leading different programs.
• Support in creating the teams' workplans and ensuring smooth completion.
• Facilitate management to ensure smooth daily functioning across various programs.
• Lead the hiring process, onboarding, training, and professional development of the growing team.

Program Management:

• Partner closely with the Managing Director to develop and execute the organization’s long-term strategic plans and achieve growth goals.
• Create a comprehensive plan for SVP’s programs execution.
• Track outcomes, evaluate program effectiveness, and adapt strategies based on data.
• Ensure a thorough implementation of the work plans that smoothly meet the deliverables of the various programs SVP runs.
• Assisting Managing Director and Development Director in grant tracking, contract negotiations, budgeting, and reporting on outcomes.

Communications:

• Develop and implement monthly social media content creation plan in partnership with SVP’s Managing Director and other staff members.
• Create and publish content across social media platforms.
• Manage newsletters using email marketing platform, Constant Contact.
• Maintain relationships with key reporters who work closely with SVP.
• Respond to press requests, answer their questions, and connect them with the Managing Director and membership.
• Support in developing clear, consistent messaging that reflects SVP’s values and mission.
• Draft and refine external-facing materials and statements to ensure message alignment and effectiveness.

Partnerships:

• Work with the Managing Director to build and strengthen relationships with elected officials, organizations, city agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Represent SVP in events with community partners and stakeholders.

• Like most roles in a small organization, this role requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability as duties, tasks and priorities can shift based on the organization’s needs and what’s delegated by the supervisors.
