Description

Role:

Supervises the phlebotomy team, including staff training, scheduling, and assignment of work areas and duties. Maintains expertise in phlebotomy, patient specimen collection, drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing, and Point of Care testing as applicable. Reviews and updates specimen collection procedures, training materials, and competency checklists as directed. Performs and evaluates proficiency testing and provides delegated oversight of daily laboratory operations to ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Maintain a professional, positive, and patient-focused environment for patients and coworkers.
• Follow all laboratory and clinic policies, procedures, and HIPAA regulations.
• Perform venipuncture, capillary, swab, drug screen, breath alcohol, and Point of Care specimen collections for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Ensure proper patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, transport, and specimen integrity.
• Perform patient check-in procedures as needed.
• Process and package specimens to ensure efficient delivery to the testing laboratory.
• Perform moderate complexity and waived laboratory testing, including results/data entry.
• Assist with maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment.
• Participate in proficiency testing and competency assessments.
• Train and mentor new employees and phlebotomy staff.
• Assist with development and updates of laboratory procedures, manuals, and competency checklists.
• Supervise and coordinate phlebotomy staff scheduling, assignments, and workflow in conjunction with laboratory leadership.
• Monitor and maintain inventory levels to ensure lab efficiency and safety.
• Perform additional laboratory duties as needed to maintain operational stability and reduce patient wait times.

Phlebotomist -

• Demonstrate competency to work independently (14 competency measures)
• Properly follow all laboratory/phlebotomy procedures, including correct labeling for specimens.
• Work with management on teamwork and laboratory goals.

Qualifications

Experience:

• Up to six months of similar or related experience or on the job training.
• Completion of a Phlebotomy certification course or in house phlebotomy certification.

Education:

• High School Education or equivalent required.
• Knowledge of medical laboratory terminology helpful.

Physical Requirements:

• Work may require sitting for periods of time; also stooping, bending, lifting, and stretching.
• Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard.
• Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts.

Other Skills:

• Demonstrated competency in specimen collection procedures for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Competency in drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing, and Point of Care testing.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety, specimen integrity, and regulatory compliance.
• Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills – including courtesy, tact, and professionalism.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer skills
• Exceptional customer service skills
• Ability to maintain good judgement when handling sensitive and personal information.
