Instructor - Clinical Assistant Professor, College of Nursing

Purpose of Role: Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing (CON) is committed to the tripartite mission of teaching, research and creative/scholarly activity and professional and University service and public outreach. Common faculty responsibilities derive from faculty's multiple roles as teachers, scholars, and community citizens within a University charged to serve the public good by the advancement and dissemination of knowledge. The role of individual faculty is relative to teaching, participation in the development of academic programs, engagement in research and scholarly activities, and support of the University's public service mission and is dependent on the level and type of faculty appointment as well as academic preparation.

This job description is a statement of minimum expectations and describes the level of performance expected of all faculty. In accordance with requirements of academic rank, consecutive-term and tenure track faculty are expected to perform at higher than minimum levels. Specific criteria for promotion and tenure can be found in the College of Nursing Criteria for Faculty Appointment and in the University of Oklahoma Health Campus (OUHC) Faculty Handbook, Sections 3.8 and 3.9.

Appointment: Faculty are accountable to their assigned department chair.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide high quality instruction (didactic, experiential, simulation, etc.) and interprofessional learning experiences by incorporating the latest research, knowledge, and theory into all instruction.

2. Update course content, courses, and curriculum according to the CON and University policies and procedures.

3. Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to advance the education, research, and service mission of the College and University.

4. Maintain current knowledge and competence in area of expertise.

5. Contribute to the development of curriculum, teaching materials, and evaluation at all levels.

6. Seek new and better devices, techniques, online technologies, procedures, and methods to improve the teaching and learning process.

7. Recognize individual needs of students and provide challenging learning opportunities for all learners while maintaining a supportive learning environment.

8. Provide academic/career advisement and encouragement to students through formal and informal conferences.

9. Design, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based teaching strategies to supplement and improve instruction and ensure student outcomes.

10. Assign grades that reflect student achievement and progress.

11. Provide timely and appropriate feedback to students.

12. Participate in student recruitment and retention activities.

13. Develop continuing education opportunities.

14. Remain active in fields of study through research/scholarship.

15. Contribute to one's science through dissemination of articles, books, presentation of findings, and in other ways.

16. Seek intramural and extramural funding to advance one's research/scholarship.

17. Leverage professional expertise and experience to engage in service to the department, CON, OUHC, professional organizations and community.

18. Promote the OUHC CON positively to the community and to current and future students and graduates.

19. Work collaboratively with department chair to determine annual instructional workload assignment.

20. Implement and evaluate clinical practice and outreach as they relate to the OUHC CON master plan for evaluation.

21. Support the OUHC CON mission and vision.

22. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Licensure: Eligible for or hold current registered nurse license for the State of Oklahoma is required to teach in the undergraduate program and to teach clinical courses in the graduate program.

Education: For faculty teaching in the Undergraduate Program, a Graduate Degree in Nursing is strongly preferred. Baccalaureate degree in nursing plus evidence of continued progress toward a master's or higher degree in nursing with completion of a minimum of six (6) semester hours per calendar year, with the expectation that the master's in nursing degree is completed within two years of starting the program.

For Faculty teaching in the PhD and DNP Programs, a Terminal Degree in Nursing, Health, Science, or Social Science related field is required. Faculty teaching in the PhD Program must meet the HSC Graduate College faculty appointment guidelines for Associate Member or Full Member Appointment at level 3 or 4 authority. For faculty teaching in the Master's Degree Program, a master's degree in Nursing, Health, Science, or Social Science related field is required, with a master's degree in Nursing strongly preferred. A terminal degree in Nursing, Health, Science or Social Science is preferred.

Experience and Specialties:

• 2 years of clinical practice experience for licensed applicants required

• Faculty teaching in advanced practice programs (NP, CNS, or CRNA) must hold appropriate specialty certification and have a minimum of one year of advanced practice registered nurse experience in the specialty.

• 2 years of higher education teaching preferred

• A record of scholarship and extramural funding preferred

• Proven ability to provide leadership in a complex environment.

• Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in building strong working relationships with a collaborative style.

• Enjoys interacting with people and can easily connect with faculty and staff in the College and University across disciplines and among external entities in the community.

• Demonstrated experience working in a faculty, staff, and student environment as a faculty member.

• Evidence of successful collaborations with community partners and faculty teams in an academic setting; effective communication skills; knowledge of nursing academic curricula and programs; plans and conducts effective meetings; and evidence of leadership ability

• Demonstrated ability to be engaging and persuasive with strong teamwork skills, politically astute, diplomatic, and able to manage by influence.

• Flexible and capable of responding to multiple demands in a time-sensitive manner

• Ability to exercise astute judgment in all matters related to academic affairs

• Proficient with MS Office applications, learning management software, and other technology used in teaching, research, and practice.
