Help launch the next generation of Girl Scout troops! We're looking for a new troop support specialist who loves coaching volunteers, building community, and creating amazing experiences for girls and families. In this high-impact role, you'll guide new troop leaders through their first year, provide hands-on training and support, and help turn new troops into thriving, lasting communities. ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION


We are one of 111 councils chartered by GSUSA, the world's leading organization dedicated solely to girls, where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success. In partnership with caring adults, girls develop qualities to serve them all their lives: strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their potential and self-worth. We serve almost 7,000 girls throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. With the guidance of over 5,000 dedicated and trained volunteers, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. From exploring science, technology and the environment to learning about healthy living, anti-bullying and financial literacy, girls are given opportunities to be challenged and learn new skills.


SUMMARY OF POSITION


The new troop support specialist focuses on increasing first-year girl and adult membership retention through the establishment and intentional support of new troops and troop leaders. They provide support, mentoring, training, leadership development, and girl programming support for all first-year troops. They assist with recruiting adult volunteers to support the goals of the troop and increase coach new volunteers on best practices regarding troop management, meeting planning, and educational and fun experiences to increase engagement.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Implement innovative strategies that focus on intentional support of the specific needs of new troop volunteers that results in increased first-year retention of both girls and adults.
  • Support new troops with creating annual calendars, opening a bank account, creating caregiver engagement strategies, and providing programming in line with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to members of a newly established troop during their first year.
  • Communicate with service unit volunteers to welcome and support new troops.
  • Secure caregiver participation in troop leadership roles.
  • Coordinate orientation and training that is in line with expectations of the council's volunteer experience and policies. Monitor to ensure volunteers receive training necessary to deliver appropriate girl activities.
  • Develop networking opportunities for new leaders to build relationships in the Girl Scout community.
  • Evaluate newly established troops, support their administrative needs, and communicate with new volunteers, girls and their families.
  • Become an expert in the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) to help new troops take the lead with pre-set meeting plans, calendar planning and communication with families.
  • Provide excellent customer support and follow-up with members as assigned, by problem-solving, managing, and responding appropriately to all inquiries.
  • Provide interpretation of GSUSA initiatives and national and local trends affecting girls throughout the council jurisdiction.
  • Ensure all activities comply with GSUSA and GSCCC safety and risk management policies.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop innovative strategies to ensure effective membership engagement. Attend local community events, festivals, school or faith partner events and other opportunities to support lead generation for new troops, on occasion and as needed.
  • Active participation in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.
Requirements

Education, Experience, & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in nonprofit, youth development, community engagement, or other relevant area.
  • Must have experience working with volunteers.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scouting preferred.
Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent technical computer skills in Microsoft Office 365. Salesforce experience preferred. Ability to learn new software as required.
  • Ability to project a high level of professionalism while networking in the public arena. Ability to speak passionately and with conviction about the organizational mission and its importance to the public.
  • Understand the functions of volunteers and monitor use of volunteers within existing constraints and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, tools, and legal issues associated with supervising and supporting adult volunteers.
  • Ability to analyze information, formulate work plans, articulate goals and produce required statistical reports.
  • Demonstrated reasoning and negotiation skills to identify and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrates a commitment and ability to interact with diverse populations.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to regularly work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends.
  • Ability to travel throughout Council jurisdiction.
  • Must have personal transportation, possess a valid driver's license, personal auto insurance, and meet the Council insurance company's requirement for coverage.
  • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become a registered member of GSUSA.
  • Sucessfully pass background investigation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT


The employee is regularly required to walk, sit, use hands and fingers for the operation of computer keyboard and other office equipment, talk and hear within normal range for telephone use and public speaking. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. The employee must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal, preparing and analyzing data and figures, extensive reading, and driving. Occasional high stress work may be experienced in dealing with customers.
